The estate blends seamlessly into the village amidst the maze of narrow streets lined with stone houses topped with barrel tiles situated to the south of Gordes. Yet it is a genuine Provençal hamlet in itself, opening out onto the countryside, with its various buildings, its inner courtyards where fountains bubble, its vaulted passageways, secluded gardens, boules court and, of course, its swimming pool, sheltered behind a wall and surrounded by lush, fragrant vegetation. Inside, everything has been fitted out and restored in keeping with the character of the building and the local area, with a clear eye for detail. Rooms, suites, holiday cottages: there is a wide range of accommodation on offer, ensuring there is something to suit everyone in the heart of one of the most popular regions.
After 20 years working in New York, where I ran an international shop fitting consultancy and my husband worked in the fashion industry, we felt the need to take our lives in a new direction. We longed for a peaceful environment, close to nature, conducive to a healthier lifestyle and to spending time with friends. After an extensive search, we discovered this old farmhouse in the Luberon, which was in a very dilapidated state at the time, but which boasted remarkable architecture. Despite the scale of the work, we immediately recognised its potential. We fully restored it, whilst preserving its authenticity and Provençal character. We are delighted to now be able to introduce guests to this place, which we have brought back to life.
The estate is a former hamlet whose buildings are arranged around inner courtyards. An old road once ran through the estate. It has been replaced by three successive courtyards, featuring fountains, benches and relaxation areas. Connected by a series of four dry-stone arches, they lead to the garden. This former silkworm farm, which is over 250 years old, has been restored with the utmost respect for its history. The facades have been restored to reveal their exposed stonework, the corridors have been fitted with their original terracotta floor tiles, and the walls have been rendered with lime plaster, in keeping with traditional techniques. Each intervention has been designed to preserve the site’s original character, so that each building retains its own identity whilst blending harmoniously into the Provençal heritage.
The property is a former farmhouse situated in one of the farming hamlets of Gordes, founded in the 1600s. Named “Les Martins” after the founding family, this hamlet was once home to workers who lived close to the land but too far from their village to make the daily journey. In the 1950s, a renowned English interior designer, best known for her work on the Queen Mary, transformed the old barn into an elegant residence opening out onto the Luberon, featuring vast picture windows and an English-style garden. We purchased the estate in 2016 and carried out a complete restoration before it opened in spring 2017.
We love to welcome our guests personally and look after them throughout their stay, organising wine tastings, picnics, restaurant bookings and excursions to explore the region. We have created a range of different spaces so that everyone can make the most of the grounds: secluded courtyards, a lounge and media library, terraces, a heated swimming pool, a hammock and a fire pit for evenings under the stars. Our garden, with its scents of thyme, rosemary, lavender and jasmine, is the perfect place to relax. We also provide bicycles and offer in-room massages and yoga sessions. Every week, a table d’hôtes hosted by a local chef and private dinners offer guests the chance to enjoy market-fresh cuisine made with fresh, seasonal produce. Our shop brings together our own creations, handcrafted items and second-hand finds.
In Gordes, “Le Mas” serves seasonal Provençal cuisine in a magnificent 19th-century farmhouse, with a menu that changes daily depending on what is available at the market. In Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade, “Le Château La Coste” combines biodynamic viticulture, art, architecture and fine dining. The estate is home to several restaurants, including “Louison”, which has three Michelin stars, as well as a contemporary artwork trail in the heart of the vineyard. In L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, the “International Antiques and Second-hand Goods Fair” transforms the town into a vast open-air art market. When it comes to dining, “Le Jardin du Quai” serves seasonal Provençal cuisine in a peaceful garden, whilst “L’Atelier du Jardin”, its bistro, offers gourmet cuisine that meets the same high standards of quality.
The property can be used for filming or photography. Professionals can access 600 m² of buildings, of which 200 m² is the main house, as well as the 5,000 m² garden. For large-scale productions, renting out the entire estate is recommended. There are eight bedrooms available to accommodate teams on site. There is also a car park with space for eight cars and an electric vehicle charging point.
