On the outskirts of Girona, where the countryside begins to take precedence and extend towards the last wooded hills before the Mediterranean Sea, this former 19th-century farmhouse has been transformed into a refined villa. But beneath its aristocratic air with its clean lines and smooth plasterwork, the interior is much more contemporary than you might imagine. Its renovation cleverly combines features from the past with a modern layout and all in a beautiful harmony of colours, materials and soft lighting to make you stay as relaxing as can be. Depending on your mood, you can spend your days lazing in the garden or by the pool or discovering this region in north-east Catalonia, which has much to discover.
We live in Girona, but this holiday home right on our doorstep was just perfect for a weekend house in a chic yet relaxed environment just a stone's throw from the old town.
La Torre de Can Puig is a property dating back to 1836, surrounded by 5 000 m² of garden. The house was completely restored in 2021. The house, a stone one-storey former farmhouse, has been restored with elegant design features that combine contemporary elements with rustic touches from the original architecture. It overlooks the beautiful surroundings of the Sant Daniel valley, the Benedictine monastery and Girona Cathedral in the distance.
Once part of a farmhouse owned by the Sant Daniel valley monastery opposite, the house was acquired in the second half of the 19th century by Josep Puig Corominola, a metal manufacturer. He transformed the house into a summer residence, where he held grand receptions for Catalan high society. In 1936 a lieutenant colonel took up residence here in the Spanish Civil War, which helped save it. At the end of the war, the property was returned to the Puig family and was kept as a summer residence until the 1950s. The family gradually stopped staying here and until the 1980s, it was entrusted as to a farmer who supplied the Puig family with fresh vegetables, eggs and poultry. After his death, the estate, which was unoccupied, fell into abandonment and gradually deteriorated. Squatters moved in and it was transformed into a cultural, artistic and social space that aimed to challenge the political and economic system in place at the time. In 2007, the entire property was walled off. We bought it from the Puig family in 2020, and planned a new future for it.
We give guests a journey back in time but with a certain level of comfort, space (250 m²) and a beautiful swimming pool. Nestled in the Sant Daniel valley, a natural gateway to the Gavarres massif and a starting point for hiking trails, the house is also a 10-minute walk from the city of Girona, a 30-minute drive from the Costa Brava and its beaches, and just 40 minutes by train from Barcelona.
The "El Cul del Mónque" restaurant serves home-cooked meals, using local fresh produce. The "Reverter" pastry and chocolate shop is just two minutes from the house. "La Comuna”, a café and restaurant, serves local produce and ethically produced foods. "El Mirador de Can Pi”, is a restaurant that serves creative cuisine based on wild plants and inspired by Mediterranean cuisine. The “Massana" restaurant, which has two Michelin stars. AQVA, the urban spa, in the heart of the old Barri vell district, located in Girona's first hospital dating back to the 12th-17th centuries. Lola Café Club is a nightclub giving live rumba concerts. From Sant Pere de Galligants, you have access to the Sant Daniel valley, a vast green area adjacent to the city of Girona that can be explored on foot or by bike. Girona lies at the confluence of four rivers, and the river has a host of activities, for example, kayaking on the Ter and canyoning.
The entire property can be rented out for filming and photo shoots. The 250 m2 house has five en-suite bedrooms, two of which are on the ground floor. The three other bedrooms, a fitted kitchen opening onto a dining area with a large table seating ten are all located on the upper floor, which is accessed by inside and outside staircases. This floor leads to a mezzanine living room with a fireplace. The house has a large terrace on the first floor overlooking the 5000 m2 garden and the monastery.
