The estate is nestled in a twenty hectare wooded and flowered park with a pond and surrounded by a one hundred and fifty hectare forest. It has been owned by our family for over two hundred years. After ten years in the West Indies, we made the choice to settle here as a family in 2015 and to create a seasonal rental and event company in order to restore and maintain the estate.
The main body of the building is a seven-metre wide mansion with a double exposure. The east-west orientation gives it a lot of light. The elegance of the symmetrical architecture, dating from the 18th century, earned Bouthonvilliers its classification as a Historic Monuments. The chateau is made up of two 16th century pavilions (Henri IV) and a central part from the 18th century with mansard roofs. Inside, vintage parquet floors and moldings contribute to the refinement of this exceptional residence. The outbuildings, built in the 19th century for the staff and the horses, still house the stables as well as a gîte that increases the chateau's accommodation capacity.
The first traces of habitation in the area were formerly known as Boscovilare (wood villa) and date from the Gallo-Roman period. The estate was changed several times over the centuries until the 19th century to which it owes its current appearance. The chateau belonged to Louis de Courcillon, one of the most loyal supporters of the King of Navarre (the future Henri IV) in his endeavor to pacify Beauce and Perche during the wars of religion. Henry IV is said have stayed in Bouthonvilliers and numerous spots such as the Pont Henri and the Chemin du Carrosse attest to the passage of the king. In 1796, Alphonse de Possesse, ancestor of the current owner Édouard de Verdun, inherited the estate and tasked Joly, a landscape architect in Chartres, to replace the French park with an English one. It was notably planted with blue Atlas cedars, a species which had just been introduced to Europe by a relative of the Possesse family, Charles de Salaberry, the author of numerous travel memoires. In 1878, the Possesse family had a new chapel built in the old dovecote. The sanctuary was blessed by the Bishop of Chartres on 1 September 1879. In 2015, Édouard de Verdun, a descendant of the Possesse family by his paternal great-grandmother, inherited the estate and settled here with his family.
The location of the Château de Bouthonvilliers is ideal, halfway between Paris (1 hour and 15 minutes away) and the Loire chateaus. The estate can be rented for group holidays and private or professional events. Guests will enjoy the chateau life and the French art of living for a week or a weekend. The rental is accompanied by many activities and services such as a heated swimming pool open from April to October, a large outdoor play area and an indoor play room, restaurant services, free bikes on site and a fishing spot by the pond, horse riding in the park and the chateau woods, guided historic tours of the estate, baskets of fresh vegetables grown on site in the old vegetable garden, wine and local products available to purchase on site, cooking lessons and wine-tasting workshops with an oenologist in the cellar, tourist excursions by bus to discover the region (Chartres, Versailles, Chambord, vineyards, etc.), hot air balloon flights from the chateau and wellness services (massage, yoga classes, etc).
An electric boat ride on the Loir at Bonneval, ten kilometres from the chateau. Go to Gohory by bike to discover delicious goat cheeses from the Boutard farm. Visit the imposing Châteaudun Castle and stroll through its medieval alleys or discover Chartres, which is lit up every evening from April to October.
Bouthonvilliers Castle is the perfect setting for photo shoots or filming. An exceptional environment where every detail brings the authenticity and elegance of an 18th century residence to your photos or films. The entire estate can be made available. The chateau is made up of two large living rooms connected by a vestibule, a dining room with wood paneling and painted canvases and a large kitchen equipped with old items such as copper utensils and a wood stove. On the first floor there are four bedrooms and three bathrooms and on the second floor are seven bedrooms and three bathrooms, all authentic and with antique furniture. The red brick outbuildings with many charming details were built around 1860. Each part of the estate provides many possibilities for successful shots. The estate includes a twenty hectare English-style park with a meadow, woods a pond, a small French garden with a wrought iron greenhouse, a vegetable garden enclosed by old walls and a swimming pool (5 x 12m). An old dovecote transformed into a chapel in the 19th century adds to the charm of the park.
