An 18th-century farmhouse converted into a place to stay
and holiday north-west of Agen, in the Lot-et-Garonne department

Our opinion

Life changes can sometimes lead to fruitful projects that motivate and energise people. The former farmhouse, now a family home and guest house, is a fine example of this. The buildings, which form a hamlet surrounded by thick foliage, have been carefully renovated, and the surrounding land has retained its vocation as a food-producing area. Extensive orchards and new vegetable crops provide much of the daily food supply. A stay at Le Clos de Lusignan will be a wonderful opportunity to share in the passion for life that has been created by the owners, in the heart of a powerful and generous land where bastides, towns and villages are all treasures to be discovered.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

We wanted to leave Paris and offer our children a better quality of life near to nature. And in the end, it was property that chose us, not the other way round. All of the criteria we were looking for were here: the charm of the white stone, lush vegetation creating a green setting around the buildings guaranteeing peace and privacy, a beautiful barn to restore, 12 hectares of meadows and woods surrounding the house and offering numerous possibilities, but also and above all, an incredible energy that simply enchanted us and convinced us that we had found the ideal place for our new life.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

Situated on the edge of the village of Lusignan-Petit, near Agen, the main house, a farmhouse built of white Lot stone, dates back to the 18th century. Part of the walls date back to the 15th century and another part to the 13th century. A former prune oven is now one of our guest rooms. The property also includes an outbuilding, which is now a gîte surrounded by greenery, and a large building which used to contain a barn that we have restored and which is now used to host seminars, training courses and other events, as well as an old cowshed, which has now been converted into a meeting room. The charm of the past and raw materials such as stone and wood have been preserved, and blend in harmoniously with the decoration of the rooms and reception areas, which are exclusively adorned with antiques and salvaged items.

What is its history ?

There is almost nothing written about the history of the village and its surroundings. But as we met people and by talking to the locals, we were able to learn a little more about the property. It is a former tenant farm that once belonged to the Lusignan family, one of the village's leading families. For a long time, the property was a farm dedicated successively to livestock, wine-growing and tree crops. The canton's vet and a bonesetter also lived here for a time, imbuing the place with stories and memories.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

A haven of peace and connection. The 12 hectares of meadows and woods surrounding our property are home to roe deer, wild boar, badgers, foxes, rabbits and other wild animals. A beautiful pond nearby is a paradise for herons, wild geese, egrets, dragonflies and frogs. We have created a permaculture vegetable garden, planted around 100 fruit trees and restored the 450 or so existing apple trees. Our two orchards are tended by a ram and about ten ewes. A few sheep and a dozen geese frolic happily between the trees, and around 30 laying hens and three rabbits are raised in the open air, much to the delight of our daughters and our guests’ children. We offer table d'hôte dining on certain evenings of the week. All our meals are home-cooked and seasonal, with products sourced directly from our own garden or from first-rate local producers. Outside the summer season, we also welcome professional working groups, families and friends for a meal or a festive cocktail, all prepared by us. Finally, as parents of four young children, families are very welcome. As well as the swimming pool, there are swings, a sandpit, tree houses and a home-based educational farm to delight young and old alike.

Places you would personally recommend

"La Maison Bleue" restaurant in the magnificent bastide town of Clermont-Dessous, entirely pedestrianised and overlooking the Garonne valley. It offers refined, semi-gastronomic cuisine at unbeatable value for money. "À la Croisée des chemins", another small restaurant in the village of Bazens, supplied by organic producers, is also well worth a visit. The villages of Pujols and Penne d'Agenais shouldn't be missed. The medieval village of Penne-d'Agenais, one of France's most beautiful villages, watches over the Lot and its valley from its promontory. Perched on a hill overlooking the Lot valley, Pujols, an ancient Albigensian stronghold, has survived the centuries and wars, all the while retaining its medieval character. Nérac and its castle, the favourite residence of the Albret family and stronghold of Protestantism. The future Henri IV and Queen Marguerite de Valois, known as Queen Margot, lived there together for around ten years. A number of extremely well-maintained and signposted hiking trails pass through or close to the property.
