At the end of the long path through the fields, Ferrassou appears in profile behind its simple keep, as if to prolong its surprise effect even further. Set on the edge of a limestone cliff, overlooking the Lot, this stone sentinel has been constantly embellished over the centuries to become a marvel of balance and harmony. A recent renovation has been carried out, respecting the different eras and blending them into different décors, bringing elegance and comfort to this residence, which is now dedicated to receiving guests. The Académie française gives the word “sentinel” the distant Latin origin of "sentire", which means "to perceive by the senses, to grasp through intelligence". Isn't that what Château de Ferrassou offers, surrounded by its vast parkland, unspoilt countryside and a host of historic sites to discover?
Set in 35 hectares of meadows, orchards, lakes and parkland with ancient trees, the property can be reached at the end of a 600 metre driveway on the banks of the River Lot. That is what won me over straight away. The place's magic combines history, nature and the art of living in a harmony that seemed impossible to find elsewhere.
This holiday estate is built around a listed château with two towers listed as historic monuments. The main building, built in the Middle Ages on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Lot, rises above a vast vaulted hall. A square tower houses a monumental, flamboyant, 15th-century Gothic spiral staircase that culminates in a palm tree shape. The round Renaissance tower, which is 11 metres in diameter, has three floors lit by mullioned windows. The sober, powerful outbuildings, probably dating back to the 16th century, include a 45 metre vaulted hall and a barn converted into a reception room.
This residence was probably built before the Hundred Years' War around a vaulted brick room that can be dated back to the 14th century. It enjoyed its heyday in the 15th and 16th centuries, when it was enlarged and embellished by several members of the wealthy Lustrac family, who were introduced to the king's court. After falling into disrepair in the 18th century, the house was restored and remodelled between 1812 and 1820 in the neo-classical style, providing comfort that was in keeping with the times while preserving its exceptional architectural heritage.
Above all, we offer a way of life: that of a welcoming house, with its history, its silences and its long vaulted medieval hall, transformed into a private auditorium around the historic grand piano. For the duration of their stay, visitors become guests in a real living place, marked by time and stories, nature and works of art. They can feel free, curious or peaceful. We invite them to share its heritage, discreet elegance and time for themselves. The surroundings are also very peaceful, with the nearby river adding to the serenity.
I recommend two exceptional restaurants: in Lauzun, the restaurant "Clément Artisan Culinaire", a Bib Gourmand - a label awarded by the Michelin guide to restaurateurs offering fine cuisine at moderate prices - run by a very creative young chef. “L'Hostellerie du Rooy", a traditional gourmet restaurant in Villeneuve-sur-Lot, offers excellent, authentic cuisine. For sports and nature lovers, there is paragliding from the Penne d'Agenais hill, amateur aviation with the Rogé flying club, and rowing on the River Lot. In Tournon d'Agenais, the "Blues Station" association organises blues and jazz concerts all year round with internationally renowned artists.
