The Huberhaus is one of the first architectural monuments that was saved from decay by the foundation Ferien im Baudenkmal. After the last inhabitant left it at the end of the 19th century, the house stood empty for almost 100 years and threatened to fall apart completely. Together with the Valaisan Monument Conservation Society and the support of the Swiss Heritage Society, the Foundation was able to take over the house and, after two years of restoration work, inaugurate it as a holiday home.
The Huberhaus is a traditional alpine wooden building, with a stone base and a wooden knitted construction above it. The entrance leads directly into the kitchen in the rear, partly bricked part of the house. In the front part facing south is the living room and above it the bedroom. On the north side there is a newer extension in which a further bedroom and a modern bathroom have been built in. During the restoration the historical building fabric was preserved. Thus the old front windows, the historical stone oven or the floor in the parlour could be preserved.
The Huberhaus is located in the Upper Valais, in a small, quiet hamlet with a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains. The area used to be very poor and the mountain farmers had to clear a lot of forest to preserve fertile arable land. The oldest parts of the building date back to the 16th century. The old wooden beams, the low ceilings, a steep wooden staircase and the soapstone stove still remind us today of the often arduous life of the mountain farmers who lived there. A gentleman named Mr. Huber, after whom the house was named, was the last inhabitant of the house, who left it in 1891. From then on, the house stood empty and fell into disrepair, until the Stiftung Ferien im Baudenkmal took it over in 2006 and, after two years of renovation, inaugurated it as a holiday home in 2008.
Guests of the Huberhaus experience 500 years of Valais architectural history during their visit. On arrival, they are guided through the house by the guest advisor and learn more about the history and the architectural features of the monument. Creaking floorboards, the smell of the soapstone stove and the wonderful view of the surrounding mountains make the stay in the Huberhaus an unforgettable experience. The house is furnished with Swiss designer furniture and objects from regional manufactories. The minimalistic furnishing allows to put the architecture into focus. All amenities are provided for. The guest advisor is available to the holiday guests for questions during their stay.
The Huberhaus is situated in a small hamlet surrounded by a few, also historic wooden houses, about two kilometres from Bellwald. Bellwald is a well-known holiday destination for winter and summer sportsmen. In summer hikers can reach extensive hiking areas with mountain lakes and panoramic routes with the nearby chair lift. In winter, the spacious and snow-assured ski area attracts many winter sports enthusiasts. A trip to the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site Aletsch, or to the Binntal or Goms with its traditional villages is highly recommended. We also recommend that our guests take a free guided tour of the historic villagecentre of Bellwald.
The Huberhaus offers space for four people in two bedrooms. The kitchen is fully equipped, including an oven and a dishwasher. The interior decoration, produced by the Zurich interior designer Jasmin Grego, is made up of contemporary furniture from Swiss designers and producers.
