Just a few metres from the seaside, this former patrician house belonging to an 'American' who had gone far away to seek his fortune has retained all the charm of these residences that are testament to the success of their builders. The exotic plant varieties and sought-after decor (which showcase both a quest for taste and a new social status that was acquired through courage and ambition) have been carefully maintained. There is no sign of ostentation, however, but rather an elegant bourgeois comfort that oscillates stays between a warm retreat and life in the great outdoors.
We fell head over heels for this old family home that had fallen into disrepair and we bought it at the end of the 1980s to make it our home. After a few months of reflection, we decide to share its beauty by transforming it into a unique place that reflects Corsican hospitality. After a patient restoration, the house became a small, authentic hotel which opened its doors in 1990.
The Castel Brando Hotel occupies the old Casa Calisti, an authentic mansion and its outbuildings dating back to the 19th century. The rooms are spread across four buildings with two or three floors. The house has a shaded interior patio with a superb hundred-year-old olive tree and centuries-old palm trees at its centre. The hotel is surrounded by a park made up of exotic trees brought back by the first owners in the 19th century, they include palm trees, cedars and lime trees from the Caribbean, Lebanon and South America.
Castel Brando is an 'American House' typical of the Corsican Cape. It was built in 1853 by Monsieur de Zerb, a Corsican doctor of the Napoleonic armies. It was taken over and beautified a few years later by Monsieur Calisti, an Erbalungian who made a fortune in sugar cane plantations in the early 19th century in Santo Domingo. Like many inhabitants of Cape Corsica at the time, he had left for the 'Americas' and then returned to his village to acquire a luxurious home once his fortune was made. This imposing house, still full of simplicity, was the symbol of his social success. But over the years and generations, visits by Calisti's descendants became rarer and the house was abandoned. We then bought it as a home and eventually decided to turn it into a small hotel.
Comfortable and modern rooms, a park shaded by palm trees and centuries-old exotic trees, two swimming pools, one of which is heated, an outdoor jacuzzi, an organic Spa with 100% Corsican cosmetics and a relaxation area, a restaurant (Les Américains) with a menu inspired by island culinary culture. Everything has been designed to welcome you into a real haven of peace, comfort and escape. The hotel is located fifty metres from the sea. The hotel industry is a passion here and is based on the desire to meet others. It is this exchange, this experience that guests come to Castel Brando for - the moment when you are no longer a tourist but a guest.
Erbalunga, a bustling medieval fishing port on Cape Corsica, is listed as a Historic Monument and considered one of the most beautiful villages in Corsica and the Mediterranean. It is a place full of charm and poetry with its Genoese tower and picturesque alleyways. Between sea and mountains, Cape Corsica, the most preserved region on the Île de Beauté, still maintains its ancient soul imbued with a rare simplicity and authenticity. There are many secret coves with crystal clear waters near the hotel. The nature reserve at the tip of Cape Corsica and its customs trail are a must. As is the region of Agriate towards Saint-Florent. At the bend of the road, you will see the emblematic Genoese towers, the famous 'American Houses', the hilltop villages and the marinas clinging to the rocks at the water's edge.
105 € - 295 € per night
The rooms are spread across four buildings and all have a private bathroom, air conditioning and Wi-Fi. Some rooms have a terrace or balcony.
