In Brittany, with sea views,
a 120 m² traditional house
Penmarch, FINISTERE brittany 29760 FR

Location

In southern Finistère, at the western edge of the historic pays of Bigouden, the Atlantic coastline stretches in long sandy beaches broken by granite outcrops. The property stands in Penmarc'h, a coastal village of three harbours, each ringed by traditional local housing. Set between the Eckmühl lighthouse and the busy quays of Saint-Guénolé, on the edge of a protected natural area, the address is discreet, 30 minutes by car from Quimper station. Paris is 4 hours by TGV.

Description

Set at the end of a residential cul-de-sac, the plot is bounded by a low ashlar wall. The house stands slightly set back from the road, which runs along its north elevation. A pedestrian path skirts the property to the west and south.
The house rises one level above ground. In the style of the 1950s, the walls are of rendered rubble stone with dressed granite surrounds to all openings. Flanked by two gable-end chimney stacks, the symmetrical gabled slate roof runs north to south. Two long shed dormers light the upper level. A garage adjoins to the east. The main entrance is at the centre of the north elevation; a secondary entrance opens to the west. To the south, a French window gives onto the garden. Window and door frames are in PVC with electrically operated roller shutters on the ground floor and manually operated roller shutters on the upper level.

La maison

The ground floor
The entrance hall opens to the west onto a reception room with triple exposure and and 360° sea views. A fitted kitchen extends to the south. To the east, a bedroom connects via an anteroom to a study and shower room. An open-tread staircase with mahogany treads and a wrought-iron balustrade leads to the upper level; a lavatory adjoins. Black encaustic tiles cover the vestibule and reception room, the remaining floors are tiled throughout.
The upstairs
A light-filled landing serves three bedrooms and a bathroom with lavatory. The floors are in solid oak parquet, except in the shower room. Storage is built in throughout.

Le garage

Under a slate roof and set back from the house, the garage forms a single large raw space currently used as a boiler room. The beams are painted white and the floor is a concrete slab. Ceiling height is generous, and two doors serve the space, facing the garden.

Our opinion

With the sea as its sole horizon, this is an authentic Breton house — a landmark on the Bigouden shore, steeped in maritime and local tradition. In the reception rooms and bedrooms alike, each window frames a distinct seascape whose shifting tones change with the light and the seasons. The shoreline, within a few steps of the front door, promises long days of swimming or quiet rest; the village nearby meets every practical need. In good order throughout, the property could also be readily reconfigured to gain in comfort and space.
