It all starts with the setting: a splendid mountain landscape, a renowned spa and a palace that had its moment of glory in the Belle Époque when it was fashionable to come and “take the waters”. Times have changed and the ostentation is gone. But the scenery remained and gave birth to new dreams. As in Woody Allen's film “The Purple Rose of Cairo”, where Cecilia is invited to cross the cinema screen to join her favourite actor, visitors here enter a magical world. From the Grocery Shop to the Tearoom, from the Decoration area to the Boudoir where you can take up residence, you will travel through the ages in a tumult of taste and visual sensations that will almost make you forget that outside, nature offers an intoxicating show as well.
I ran the luxury hotel group Les Hôtels Particuliers, founded by Philippe Savry for 13 years. On the eve of my 40th birthday, I decided that wanted to create my own place. That is how I opened "Monsieur Aurélien", in the "first class" dining room of Le Sarciron, a former spa hotel in Le Mont-Dore. This concept store combines delicatessen, confectionery, chocolate and a tea room/tasting area. In 2022, I transformed the shop next door into a space dedicated to decoration. In June 2023, I got back into the hotel business by creating "Le Boudoir Monsieur Aurélien", a hotel suite located just above my boutique.
The former palace, now a listed building, with its monumental entrance, majestic dome and conservatory under an imposing glass roof, forms a huge island around an inner courtyard. During renovation work, I rediscovered the original herringbone parquet flooring. After a long search to find the plans, the facade has also been restored to its former glory thanks to work with a sign painter.
Aimé Sarciron had the palace built by the famous Clermont-Ferrand architect Louis Jarrier in 1893. A testament to the splendour and elegance of the Belle Époque, and a symbol of the golden age of the spa, the Sarciron opened its doors in 1907. Its many facilities met the expectations of guests in search of luxury, leisure and pleasure. Two restaurants, a sumptuous conservatory, 300 en-suite rooms, electric lighting, central heating and a lift made this hotel one of the most popular destinations for a wealthy international clientele. The illustrious palace was converted into a hospital during the First World War, and finally into a residence in 1959. The “first class” dining room on the ground floor was converted into a shop in the 1960s and then closed for 17 years before I discovered it.
A stay at Monsieur Aurélien's Boudoir offers guests privileged access to the incredible heritage of the Sarciron. Guests can enter through the former palace's grand gallery, wander around as they please and admire the sumptuous ironwork and immense stained-glass windows. This Belle Époque jewel combines the quality of a hotel, the charm of a guest house and the freedom of a holiday rental location. I have preserved the soul of the place by exclusively using French brands. The old-fashioned taps, the metro tiles, the beautifully crafted bathroom linen: everything has been thought through to the last detail. A breakfast menu is available for my guests, who can also find a selection of tasty takeaway dishes in the delicatessen.
"Monsieur Aurélien", a place dedicated to the art of living and gourmet pleasures, where I will be delighted to welcome you personally. In Mont-Dore, the Auberge de La Golmotte offers traditional home cooking in an intimate and refined mountain setting, while the Auberge des Mancelles serves traditional Auvergne specialities. La Grande Cascade, with its 32-metre drop, is nestled in a lush forest. The Crêtes du Sancy, an unmissable hike for experienced walkers, offers a spectacular and sometimes vertiginous route at an altitude between 1400 and 1886 metres. In the heart of a mountain cirque, Lac Chambon, with its two beaches and seaside atmosphere, and Lac Servière, a volcanic crater surrounded by landscapes ideal for contemplation, are places not to be missed.
