In the town where the narrow streets seem to want to lead walkers astray with their meandering, there are a few hidden places that make you forget that you are in the centre of the former City of the Popes, not far from the banks of the river Rhône. In the heat of the summer, you can shelter in one of the three small gardens, under the shade of a 100-year-old plane tree or the palm trees that make you feel like you are on another continent, or why not take a dip in the pool? The two houses, clad in stone and topped with Roman tile roofs surrounded by Genoise tiling, have a southern feel with their blue shutters and the trellises on the terraces. Inside, the rooms are light and welcoming, with hints of bright, cheerful colours. Are they town houses or country houses? Staying here can make you lose sense of time and space, which can sometimes be very welcome.
We fell in love with the City of the Popes, an authentic, well-preserved medieval town that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lovers of old stone buildings, museums and beautiful terraces, Avignon, an artistic and cultural centre, also offered us the warmth of the south within easy reach - only 2 hours 40 from Paris by TGV.
The property consists of two town houses. The first, with a roughly square floor layout and a 220 m2 surface area, occupies the section which used to be a cloister. The second, with a 140 m2 surface area, was formerly a workshop and has a vast, high, single room used as a living room with an open-plan kitchen under the roof. The garden, which stretches between the two houses, is divided into three green enclosed parts, one tidy and planted with box trees, the next with a romantic terrace and trellis overlooking the citrus grove. The garden extends towards the west beyond a boundary wall with a wrought-iron gate in it that opens onto a lush enclosed garden with a semi-buried pool in the centre.
The property, which stretches from east to west between two streets, regroups two separate plots of land around a botanical paradise, shaded by 100-year-old plane tree and poplars that are home to a whole host of birdlife. It is a haven of peace enclosed by the walls of the former Convent of the Minimes, which dates back to the 13th century. The main house occupies part of the former cloister, whose thick walls it still has to the east and west. It overlooks the Porte Saint Roch, in the eponymous district - once a town of miracles - surrounding a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary and consecrated in 1327 by Pope John XXII.
The property is located in the heart of a leafy urban cluster of houses, much sought-after for its peace and quiet, just inside Avignon’s ramparts. It is just a stone's throw from all services - the station, shops and businesses - but it is still an oasis within the city, tucked away between two quiet streets away from the main thoroughfares. A small gate to the west provides quick access to the Rhône and its banks.
"Le Violette” restaurant is in the Hôtel de Caumont, which itself houses the Lambert contemporary art collection. "Une Marguerite à Table", an authentic Venetian Italian restaurant run by the wonderful Anna-Maria. "L'épicerie de Ginette" for its terrace and old-fashioned sandwiches set in the vintage decor of a French bistro from the 40s and 50s. "Le Bercail” on the banks of the Rhône, with a breathtaking view over the gardens of the Popes' Palace and the Pont d'Avignon. Rent a canoe close by to paddle under the bridge and take a dip, or visit the Musée Calvet and the Musée Lapidaire, even for just a few minutes - they're free and wonderful. For decorating enthusiasts, the Atelier Vime just outside Avignon in Vallabrègues is a little gem, not forgetting the flea market in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon on Saturday mornings in Place Charles David. From here, it's easy to get to "Rue Montée du Fort" for a fantastic view of Avignon and the surrounding area.
