Surrounded by an undulating landscape where fields melt into wooded plots, Les Estournels proudly showcases the rigour of its 18th century architecture and perfectly designed park. But a change of century lies inside. The Directory inspires the interiors and transports visitors to an enchanting world through the shapes and colours, the taste for comfort and the correspondence between materials and furniture that marked the era. The ensemble embodies the gentle way of life that characterises the Lot, a region whose many historical and architectural treasures can be shared with friends and family.
A great music lover, my husband discovered the Lot region at a music festival which first took place here in 1995. Although we are originally from Switzerland, a part of us certainly feels French now and the Lot is our adopted home. We love the landscapes, the gastronomy and the people who are so open and warm. We bought Les Estournels with the aim of creating a music school here. Unfortunately, we were unable to follow through with this project so we decided to open the property as a resort.
Surrounded by a two-hectare park, the estate consists of the Château des Estourels, a mansion, a barn and a bread oven. The 18th century chateau, with its opulent appearance, was built with rough-cut white limestone from Quercy. It is topped with a four-sided roof and flanked on the eastern facade by a 19th century Neo-Gothic pentagonal tower. A monumental staircase leads up to the chateau. At the rear, a very large terrace opens onto the wooded and flowered park.
The property dates back to 1776 and was built on a former stronghold that belonged to the noble Clédié family in the 15th century. Louis de Clédié was a knight, lord of Bélot, adviser and butler to the King, and Lord-in-Waiting to His Majesty in around 1652. The chateau was completely renovated in 2019 with an attention to detail that revived the property's former beauty and noble origins whilst also remaining true to the original Directoire style. One of the most remarkable rooms is the dining room; the decor was inspired by the island of Martinique where Joséphine de Beauharnais, first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, was born.
We offer them a stay in an 18th century residence with contemporary comfort and endless charm. Surrounded by countryside, it is an energising place to stay where guests can share moments with family or friends. It is also the perfect environment for lovers of authenticity, calm, nature and heritage. We welcome our guests warmly and greet them with coffee from our plantation (one of our other lines of work) and fresh eggs from our hens. We remain at their disposal and respond to requests throughout their stay.
