Our opinion

The Château de Marnand stands in all its new-found majesty on the heights of the valley that it has dominated for over three centuries. The positions it held over the years didn't spare it, but a patient and meticulous reconstruction carried out recently has restored it to its former glory and to its original vocation as a holiday resort entirely dedicated to the comfort and well-being of its visitors. The renovation of the various buildings, the meticulously tended gardens, the furniture and decor inspired by the periods in which it was built, the verdant surroundings and the refined, delicious cuisine are all the savoir-vivre you need to make your stay unforgettable.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

The Broye vaudoise is a central region in the canton of Vaud and Switzerland. Thanks to the natural surroundings and the Swiss forest, it is a real haven of tranquillity and rejuvenation. It has a pleasant climate, with snow-covered hills in the winter and mild weather in the summer. You can enjoy a quiet life in the middle of a peaceful little village here. We fell in love with the Château de Marnand and its surrounding land. A majestic and historic building representing the Switzerland of yesteryear.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

The estate extends over nine hectares of fields, orchards and forests in the heart of the Vaud countryside. It has three main buildings: the château, the châtelet and the farmhouse. The château is classical in style, with a regular floor plan, a Mansard roof, dormer windows and mullioned windows. The building is flanked by two annexes built in the early 20th century. Its courtyard, closed in by two gates, is surrounded by a Bernese farmhouse dating back to 1786 to the north and an 18th-century building to the south. Two gardens have been laid out in the central courtyard and on the side of the château, where it extends into a terrace facing the plain, marked at its ends by two late 18th-century lodges.

What is its history ?

The château estate is the nucleus of an ancient seigneury, once belonging to the de Loys family, who built a medieval fortified house here in the 16th century. In 1698, Johannes Müller, bailiff of Moudon, acquired the seigneury and built the present château. It then passed into the hands of the Thormann and Notz families. In 1840, a boarding school for young girls was set up here, and in 1939, the Christian philanthropic association "l'Ange de l'Éternel" became the owner. The château was unoccupied from 2015 until our arrival in 2020. Recent restorations have restored the colours, volumes and gardens as they were at the end of the 18th century. Photos by Grégoire Gardette and Elena Henneberg.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

The château, hidden away in the middle of nature, away from the world but close to everything, promises perfect rest. It is a place where history is present in every room. A stay at Château de Marnand is a journey through time and art. All of the rooms are furnished with period furniture from our collection. We are both art dealers. We offer our guests a service tailored to their needs and wishes. We offer a chauffeur service for the station or airport. An indoor swimming pool uses untreated spring water (UV treatment only). A kitchen garden in the château's gardens grows all kinds of vegetables, depending on the season. These are eaten at the château and used for gourmet meals prepared by top chefs whom we invite into our kitchens on Saturday evenings, in collaboration with teachers and students from the École hôtelière de Lausanne. The château has a large greenhouse and orchards, home to more than 100 fruit trees, as well as a small farming estate with many animals reared with the greatest respect for nature.

“Berceau de Sens", a Michelin-starred gourmet restaurant located in the EHL Hospitality Business School, the best hotel school in the world. "La Table de Mary", which also boasts a Michelin star, has a family-friendly atmosphere and extraordinary dishes. "La Vaudaire", a lakeside bistro in Lausanne. "La Ferme", a must-visit grocery shop in the heart of Yverdon-les-Bains, offers exclusively local products. "Urs Gfeller”, an organic market gardener: everything is fresh, local and delicious. “Espace Chocolat” in Lausanne and Yverdon-les-Bains is one of the only chocolate makers in Switzerland to carry out all the stages of cocoa bean processing in its own workshop. The "Fromagerie Maréchal" produces and matures its cheeses from cow to plate. Our favourites are the butter and the Maréchal Réserve, two sublime dishes made in house. "Sebanne", the village's traditional family-run bakery and patisserie. Our favourites: chocolate cherry bread, orange brioche and chestnut bread.
