The chateau's dominant position and four corner towers could give it an air of superiority, but it has nothing of the sort. On the contrary, it has kept a light, airy, joyful and carefree spirit since becoming a leisure chateau in the 1900s. As in the old days, families can retire here for a stay in the peaceful shade of the park and the unspoiled charms of a comfortable and refined residence. Tiny details, such as the creaking of the parquet floors or the latches as the windows are opened, are so delightful that guests will long to extend their stays indefinitely.
In 2018, we came to Marty and Thierry's guest house and we fell in love with this beautiful place and the region with spectacular views. As we looked around the house, the nooks and crannies, the garden and the park, we could not bare to leave it! The high up position is breathtaking. After a second visit with our children, it so happened that we unexpectedly sold our family home and now here we are in Vaulx! During our visits, we discovered the Brionnais. It is a peaceful and calm wooded landscape filled with Charolais cows and numerous Romanesque churches built during the prosperity of the abbey of Cluny. "The Charolais-Brionnais, with its well-kept and authentic wooded landscape, is the result of an evolution that began more than 300 years ago, is home to an internationally renowned breed of cattle and is a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage". The climate of southern Burgundy enchanted us with its warm temperatures during the day and cooler nights. The distinct seasons allow us to enjoy the landscapes and nature with autumnal mists, fleeting snow, bright red sunsets in summer and thousands of flowers in spring.
Vaulx is a chateau with 17th and 18th century bases that has been transformed over time. A major renovation requested by diplomat Léon Geoffray (from the Entente Cordiale between France and England) at the start of the 20th century brought nobility and comfort to the property and gave it something of an English character. The creation of the gardens was entrusted to well-known landscaper Achille Duchêne in around 1907. At that time, the house was intended for summer holidays. In 1886, a local historian described the Chateau de Vaulx as well proportioned, elegant in its simplicity, seated in a most beautiful position of height with its main facade turned to the south. This facade has a lovely view over the immense expanse of countryside, Saint-Julien-de-Civry, Dyo, Saint-Germain, Amanzé and beyond as far as the eye can see, the blue mountains and ancient Dun which sits between them. A panorama as vast as it is varied. Luckily, the landscape remains much the same to this day. Léon Geoffray extended the house with two wings to the east and west at the end of the 19th century.
The Chateau de Vaulx de Chizeul is at the edge of Charolais and Brionnais. Its origins date back to the 14th century when it was owned by the De Choiseul family until 1435. The name “de Chizeul” comes from this family name. The current Chateau de Vaulx stands four hundred metres from the former Chateau de Vaulx de Chizeul. Part of the chateau dates back to the 16th century as evidenced by the stones dated with 1563 on the facade. The chateau has gradually been modified and amplified to finally find its current appearance.
A true guest house and gite decorated with great taste. A splendid garden, spacious and comfortable rooms, perfect bedding. If the weather is chilly, a romantic log fire to warm up in the living rooms and dining rooms. During the restoration, old materials were kept wherever possible out of respect for the original building. The park is lovingly maintained, with an old-fashioned vegetable garden, a floral garden, centuries-old trees, clipped box trees, impeccable lawns, and an enchanted forest. A swimming lane, with the feel of an ornamental lake, harmonises wonderfully with the park. There are endless spots to discover in the park with a 360-degree view of the surrounding countryside.
