Scattered in the middle of the Atlantic, off the coast of Africa, volcanic yet blessed with a mild climate, there are eight of them. What? The Canary Islands. Gran Canaria is nicknamed "the continent in miniature". And with good reason...beaches and dunes, cliffs and pine forests, fields and valleys, steep mountains and deep ravines: you can find every type of landscape here. You can visit all of them in one single journey. And in the centre, Finca Lomo Cabello is the most delightful of observatories, where you can watch and choose the next day's route. This traditional farmhouse has been lovingly renovated and decorated to retain all of its original charm. The garden, with its exotic colours and scents, the layout of the rooms and the materials used, all tell the story of the island and its inhabitants, past and present. A lovely holiday is waiting to be had.
As a globe-trotting photographer, my intuition took me to the island of Gran Canaria in 2019 for a holiday with my children. As soon as I set foot on the island, I felt like I was where I was meant to be. We criss-crossed the island, through the wild, powerful nature. We started to ask ourselves, "What if we had a little house here?” Three months later, we had made our home in a traditional house in the heart of the village of San Mateo. Two years later, my partner and I discovered a finca a few minutes from the village. Once through the black gate, we found ourselves on a patio surrounded by lush vegetation. Avocado trees, wisteria and other exotic plants and a traditional house with typical Canarian architecture. It was love at first sight. We then left the first house to restore the Finca Lomo Caballo that we had just discovered.
Finca Lomo Caballo is one of Gran Canaria's last remaining fincas - rural properties - with authentic architecture. A large central patio, shaded by avocado trees, leads to every room in the house. Entirely restored by ourselves, we preserved the original materials: whitewashed lava stone walls, old stone or parquet floors, wooden ceilings, stone fireplace, traditional bread oven, traditional covered balcony. There is a terrace at the back of the house, followed by a large plot of land planted with lemon, strawberry, almond and fig trees, with views of the sea and the mountains.
Finca Lomo Caballo is a traditional farm dating back to the 19th century. Livestock were raised here, and fruit and vegetables grown. The patio was a meeting place for neighbours to get together for a chat. Today, the village elders are delighted to see the house brought back to life, which has retained its soul and its architectural features emblematic of the island. It is "a perfect restoration", they have told us. The lean-to buildings around the house, formerly small stables, will be transformed into an artist's studio and an exhibition gallery open by appointment in the coming months.
Finca Lomo Caballo is a family home, an artist's house, located in the centre of the island, 5 minutes from the village of Vega de San Mateo and halfway between the beach and hiking. Each object has a meaning, a soul, a story, brought back from distant travels. I wanted this finca to be unique, atypical and warm. A stay in Finca Lomo Caballo is about taking a break, "de-connecting" or "reconnecting" in a peaceful environment. It is a place of inspiration, in an authentic setting, conducive to creation or reflection, whatever you are searching for.
As well as the coast and beaches, Gran Canaria's richness is also to be found in the island's interior. A volcanic landscape, canyons, pine and eucalyptus forests and rocky peaks make for sublime walks and discoveries of unknown horizons. The Roque Nublo is a must-see and always moves me; the Roque Benteyga, for more experienced hikers, is exceptional, and the Guayadeque Canyon is also incredible. These are my three must-sees on the island, both for their beauty and for the energy you feel when you get there. To refresh yourself after a walk, an almond ice cream is an absolute must in the village of Tejada. A delicious pata negra ham for a gourmet aperitif (cold meats from the Vegueta market in Las Palmas); fruit and vegetables from the San Mateo market; a surprisingly good dinner, both in terms of the quality of the dishes and the atmosphere, at “Tabaïba”.
