Dominated by the medieval castle which for centuries has kept watch over the surrounding area all the way to the Rhône, the village winds through a maze of narrow streets at its feet that follow the contours of the Montagnette. Stroll through this stone labyrinth to reach "Remparts 16", which hides its secrets among all the canal-tiled houses in this typical Alpilles village. While the exterior clearly asserts its Provençal origins, with its dry stone walls, reed arbour, freshwater pool and shady vegetation, the interior decoration brings the place to life by combining modern design and old materials in a gentle symphony of monochrome hues. A discreet, refined refuge that is the ideal base from which to explore Provence.
I'm a designer and I love places with a soul - original architectural structures in their purest forms. I find my inspiration in ancient cultures, contemporary architecture and art, but also in heritage in general and Belgian heritage in particular, as Belgium is my country of origin. I was won over by the authentic feel of the village, its easy accessibility and the proximity of the surrounding countryside.
The house dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries. It overlooks the village of Boulbon and the Rhône valley. The restoration, which took over two years, respected the original traditional architecture. We renovated it with an emphasis on authenticity and respect for the past. The natural environment plays an important role, both indoors and out. There are several terraces on different levels due to its location near the Montagnette. The swimming pool is set against a wall of reclaimed stone. For the interior, we used natural and traditional materials, made by hand or using local techniques.
The property originally consisted of a group of three small buildings located within the walls of the castle fortress that stands just above the house. In the 14th century, one of them was the home of the castle lord's treasurer.
Nestling in a fold of the Montagnette, between Avignon and Tarascon, the house is located at the foot of the ruins of the Château de Boulbon, on a cobbled (car-free) street in this medieval Provencal village whose history dates back to the 11th century. This former stronghold, with its tiny streets, ancient ramparts and pretty chapels, has all the local shops you could want. We offer a place to stay where design and modern art meet centuries-old architecture. The house is filled with stunning design objects - Knoll, Carl Hansen, Vitra and Astier de Vilatte. Outside, there is a swimming pool and several terraces with views over the village and the Rhône valley.
"L'Arlatan”, a 15th-century mansion nestling in the historic heart of Arles that once belonged to the last Count of Provence, is now a work of art created by the famous designer Jorge Pardo. LUMA Arles, a foundation dedicated to supporting contemporary artistic creation. "Le Bistrot du Paradou”, a local institution, celebrates the Provencal repertoire and offers a unique gargantuan menu that changes daily. "La Chassagnette”, a Michelin-starred restaurant that is a pioneer in self-sufficiency, employs eight gardeners who look after three hectares of permaculture organic vegetable garden and orchards. Its chef, Armand Arnal, cultivates the transition from the land to the plate. Collias, on the River Gardon, is an ideal spot for kayaking or canoeing through the magnificent gorges and Pont du Gard.
