After crossing through the dense urbanisation of the city and the coast, arriving at Mar Vivo is a truly exceptional reward. This villa built at the end of the 19th century by an enlightened enthusiast, and recently renovated by a passionate lover of the place, is a place where only the superlative is an appropriate tense. The sea alone fills the horizon for as far as the eye can see, and the gardens and terraces look out over the azure. The vast interior volumes are magnified by contemporary décor of a very high standard, and the services offered on site ensure the upmost serenity for guests. "Chateau" is certainly a fitting title to underline the property's singularity. But make no mistake, the title above all pays homage to the magic of the Big Blue that has elevated it to the highest level. Happy are those who come to enjoy the view.
When we were very young, we came to the Côte d'Azur at Easter as a family. I never grew tired of admiring the magnificent properties on the seafront. So when the opportunity presented itself, I bought the Château de Mar Vivo which was built on the “wild” coast of Les Sablettes to the west of Toulon. It was built in the preserved district of Mar-Vivo which has the appearance of a small village with its array of small shops and restaurants. It is just forty minutes from the airport and twenty minutes from the TGV station. My childhood dream has been fulfilled far beyond my expectations.
This building, classified as "remarkable" by the city, was built at the end of the 19th century by Lucien Gassier when he returned from Indochina. Building engineer, architect and passionate entrepreneur, he also built the Chutes-Lavie Watershed Pavilion in Marseille which is listed as a Historic Monument. He was passionate about Southeast Asia and it is to this passion that we owe the decorative elements brought back from Indochina, such as the three dragons that adorn the corners of the roof terrace and the earthenware friezes that adorn the facade.
Until the Second World War, the chateau occupied the entire promontory down to the Sablettes beach below. The main entrance to the property was through a door in the shape of a pagoda located on the edge of the beach. After being internally remodelled a number of times, the building had been somewhat forgotten for several decades and had suffered the ravages of time and sea spray. It was in 2020 that major works were carried out to return the property to the splendour of yesteryear and to add comfort and high quality equipment.
The Château de Mar Vivo is located on a seafront promontory with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Mediterranean. Our guests benefit from a tailor-made service thanks to the discreet but efficient presence of a manager who carefully monitors their well-being and prepares breakfasts every morning. Additional services are also offered such as boat and bicycle rentals, private chefs, massages and yoga classes.
The Gaou peninsula in Brusc is a very pleasant spot for walking. For those who enjoy slightly more strenuous walks, the hike along the coastal path starting from Le Brusc (known as the “wonderful corniche”) leads to Notre-Dame du Mai, a chapel built at the highest point of Cap Sicié. If you want to eat by the beach, La Paillote in Fabrégas is less than two kilometres away, and La Kima, Le Bard'ô and Le O Petit Monde are located in Sanary near Portissol beach. Finally, our skipper offers sea trips for one or more days on his sixteen-metre sailboat.
