Why Ios? The intense blue of the sky and the shimmer of the Aegean Sea can be found all over the Cyclades, and yet something intense floats on the breeze here and awakens the senses. Could it be the memory of Homer who is said to have spent his final days here? Thirty centuries have since passed, but it still feels as though nothing has really changed. This holiday villa is the perfect illustration: conceived and designed in an ultra-contemporary spirit, with each building fitting into an ensemble of geometric lines, it seems to have found its place naturally. The dominant landscape has integrated the property along with every feature of the island. You may find yourself wondering where this strength comes from, and it is for each of us to find out.
Ios represents beautiful childhood memories for me. I had magical holidays here from the age of eight in total freedom and without danger. I would explore the sea, the fauna and flora, reach other islands by boat in just an hour, enjoy almost deserted beaches even on 15 August and friendly beach tavernas, and make lots of friends. As an adult, I took my friends, my husband and our children here. The house of Ios crystallises and perpetuates these moments of joy and renews happy memories. To our delight, the island has remained relatively untouched.
The house was designed as a mini-village. Each bungalow is independent, without common walls, and is equipped with a terrace, a dressing room and a bathroom. This allows for a lot of independence and privacy. The common areas are spacious to allow large groups to come together. The minimalist style echoes the Cyclades, where the real charm lies in the simplicity and the views. We chose stones from the island's mountain to carve our sinks and most of the furniture has been carved to remain in keeping with the style.
In 2016, we bought land in one of the most beautiful and unspoiled places on the island. At the water's edge and close to the village, with no neighbours nearby and sheltered from the wind, we also have an incredible view of Santorini. Completed in 2019, the house was built by local craftsmen and designed by Olivier Thin, a talented Parisian architect and friend who runs OTAA Architecture. We wanted a comfortable house with high quality equipment, chosen with taste but without ostentation. We also wanted the house to be energy efficient. Rainwater is therefore collected to water the garden and the hot water tanks are solar-heated. We didn't see the need for a pool - the sea is right at the foot of the house!
The discovery of a little known island with minimal urbanisation and which has retained its wild and mysterious side. A holiday resort that combines tranquillity with views, comfort and rest as well as the togetherness that large tables in beautiful settings bring. Staying in our house means spending your holidays with friends or family whilst also enjoying your independence. Guests can take a dip below the house in an almost private cove or choose one of the thirty-five beaches on the island! The place and the surrounding environment allow guests to live according to their desires, whether they be working, reading, cooking, going for a walk in the mountains or leaving with our boat to enjoy the exceptional blue sea. In the evenings, a canopy of stars forms the backdrop for dinner.
Take a walk in the village at sunset and enjoy some terrific mezes at Katogi. Try pasta with lobster at Chez Nikolau on Schinoussa, a small island of just over two hundred inhabitants, or at Chez Captain Pipinos on the island of Anti-Paros. Visit the tomb of Homer and the Paleokastro, an ancient fortress of Byzantine origin with incredible views. Explore the fish market at the port for fresh fish every day. Maria at Koumbara is a beach tavern where the atmosphere is wildly Greek. Take the mountainside road to Manganari beach, one of the most beautiful bays on the island with an exceptional 360° view. Take a trip to the smaller Cyclades: Folegandros, Sykynos, Naxos, and Milos.
