At the tip of the island, this former olive farm shares an exceptional view of the sea, and and the island of Mikonos beyond, with only a few other houses. In these arid lands that have been worked by men for centuries, you could almost believe you have the world to yourself. Bright whites and pastel tones create a soft sobriety inside the house, as if to allow minds time to soak up all the beauty that can be admired from the terraces and gardens. An intimate refuge with only two bedrooms, a lucky few will no doubt feel like privileged guests here on an island that is still well-preserved from mass tourism.
We discovered Tinos a few years ago and fell in love with the island. The churches, the calm, the breathtaking landscapes and the history of the place won us over immediately. It was during one of our many walks that we discovered Lychnaftia in particular, a magnificent pebble beach with a view of Mykonos. We appreciated the serenity and spirituality of Tinos, an island where one feels particularly peaceful. The beach is one of the quietest on the island, and being able to see the sea from our garden is priceless.
The house is representative of typical Cycladic architecture and is also an example of traditional Tinian houses that are characterised by their simple and functional design. Both inside and outside, the lines of the property are clean with the only decorative touch being the arches known as “volto”. A particular characteristic of island architecture, these arches are essential for supporting the weight of the roof, the upper level or (as they do at our property) the terrace which is accessed via an open external staircase. The colours and architecture of the buildings have practical features that respond to the problems faced by hot countries near the sea. The white reflects the heat and reduces the interior temperature. The rounded edges of the houses help to withstand the Meltem, the wind that blows on the Aegean Sea during the summer. The long tradition of marble on the island of Tinos has also adorned the exteriors of houses, terraces and gardens with beautiful decoration.
It was once a farm dedicated to olive growing (among other things). The property was then rehabilitated by an Athenian architect with a great love for Tinos. Respect was paid to the vernacular architecture of the island and the farm's original history, and the works were carried out using materials and coatings that incorporated the historical characteristics of the building. It is now a second home away from our Parisian life and a holiday rental house.
A house full of charm surrounded by a 5000m² garden dotted with lavender and planted with century-old olive trees. We enjoy a privileged location in the quiet and serene little village of Lichnaftia which is off the beaten track but only a three minute walk from the sea. There are also breathtaking views that stretch to the Aegean Sea, the island of Mykonos and even (on the clearest days) to Turkey.
Besides its beautiful beaches, Tinos is known for its vineyards, its endless artistic dovecotes, its fifty-two picturesque villages, and its sculptors and painters which include Nikolaos Gysis, Yannoulis Chalepas and Nikiforos Lytras. Marble craftsmanship has long been a tradition here as Tinos is one of the few places where green marble can be found. The dizzying road that connects the village of Marlas to that of Koumelas crosses stone quarries carved into the mountain. The Church of Panagia Evangelistria with the famous statue of the Virgin Mary is the destination of an annual pilgrimage that takes place on 15 August. The village of Isternia offers an exceptional view of the island. The terrace of the Exomeria is a lovely spot to have a drink at sunset. Give climbing the Exomvourgo a go! This rock rises to an altitude of 641m and overlooks the entire hinterland. The village of Volax, to the north, has a lunar landscape made up of giant rocks that look as though they have fallen from the sky. Kolymbithra is a good surf spot. The small port of Panormos is home to the best fish restaurants on the island. Dio Horia one of the best traditional good meal on the island...
