Secret and wild, the Creuse department remains little-known to the outside world. But all you have to do is take your time, turn off the main roads and take one of the countless little country roads to discover just how much nature is at its best here with its undulating greenery, lakes and rivers. The Domaine des Mille Sources bears the traces of this region's long history and the people who have lived here. Simple and spacious, this granite stone house has recently been reborn as a beautiful, comfortable home. With its large windows, terracotta floor tiles and stone flagstones, parquet flooring, wood panelling and stone fireplaces, it has retained all of the secrets of its past, while at the same time incorporating a number of features which are discreetly added in with the décor to make life more comfortable. Travellers who have made the choice to visit one of France's most beautiful regions will find everything they need here.
We've been connected to the Creuse for several generations. It is a wild and little-known region in the heart of France, known for its lakes and forests and made famous by the Creuse stoneworkers with their granite work. Part of our family is originally from Flayat, and we are actively involved in preserving its heritage, in particular through large-scale reforestation projects, including the planting of 40 000 trees to restore the natural ecosystems.
It is a manor house built in 1810, located in Flayat, a small village with a population of 300 in south-east Creuse. It is entirely renovated using natural and traditional materials by local artisans. The granite walls, which are typical of the Creuse region, have been restored to their original appearance after having being plastered over in the 1950s. The house is very spacious, spanning more than 700 m² over three floors. It boasts a majestic lava stone staircase, original granite flooring in the entrance hall and kitchen, a traditional inglenook fireplace, marble fireplaces, and an exceptional oak roof structure in the attic, with a ceiling height of over 10 metres.
The house, which was completely destroyed by fire during the French Revolution, was rebuilt in 1810. It belonged to an ancestor of ours who owned the surrounding land and a barn and stables in addition to the main building. Sold in the 1930s, it fell into disrepair before we bought it back in 2020. As well as the satisfaction of bringing this historic home back into the family, we gave it a new lease of life by completely restoring it, while preserving its original features, making it an unforgettable place to stay.
An ideal place to reconnect with nature and the simple pleasures of life, far away from the crowds. Here, you can read and relax under the ancient trees, lulled by the gentle sound of the spring, and dream under the stars, as Flayat has been awarded the "Star village" label due to its low level of night-time pollution. The manor house has spacious grounds with a hectare of enclosed parkland, a beautiful outdoor swimming pool and a wellness area with a sauna, which opens out onto the garden. There are various communal areas where you can enjoy life at your own pace: a library, a lounge with a piano, a bar, another lounge area and a yoga area. Electric bikes are available and massage sessions can be arranged. A housekeeper provides a personal welcome, makes your stay easier and recommending places to visit.
The small village of Flayat, situated at an altitude of 766 m in the heart of the Plateau de Millevaches Regional nature reserve, offers a wealth of walking and cycling opportunities. Lake Vassivière, one of the largest lakes in France, is a great place for water sports. You can visit the Gallo-Roman ruins in Gioux, the medieval towers in Crocq, and the Cité Internationale de la Tapisserie in Aubusson, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Felletin, another tapestry centre, has a remarkable church and a lively market. The valley of the Impressionist painters at Crozant, where Claude Monet discovered the Creuse in 1888 and painted his first series of 24 canvases, is also a must-see. Finally, enjoy dinner on the banks of the Etang de la Ramade while admiring the sunset.
