We're Irish and we discovered the Lot region during a stay in France and fell in love with it. We started looking for a property and when we found the Moulin sur Célé, we decided to leave Ireland. We now live permanently in this region that is so close to our hearts, in the heart of the Causses du Quercy Regional Nature Park. Here, the weather is good all year round and the region is untouched by mass tourism.
The property is a classic example of the Lot's traditional rural heritage. The property consists of three buildings built out of white Quercy stone and topped with hipped roofs covered in flat tiles. These are the mill, the former dovecote and the miller's house. The living quarters are on the first floor, which is accessed via an outside staircase and a porch. The house and the former dovecote are linked by a raised terrace providing views of the river on one side and the swimming pool and gardens on the other. Inside, there are large traditional stone fireplaces and oak beams throughout.
The mill was built in 1764. A family of farmers passed on the tradition of grinding grain from generation to generation. When the milling activity finished, the mill was sold, restored and gardens were laid out with a wide array of rose bushes. The mill produced wine until its last harvest in 2007. The property changed hands in 2015, and in 2020 we became the new owners.
Guests benefit from a private beach on the banks of the river, a garden, a private swimming pool and a tennis court. We put our many years of hotel experience at the service of our guests to offer them personalised attention. We welcome them, show them around the property and provide a concierge service to meet their needs. Optional services include airport transfers, babysitting, a personal trainer, private catering and beauty treatments. On arrival, guests are presented with a hamper featuring the finest local produce, and during their stay we invite them to share an aperitif in the vineyards.
The village of Marchilhac-sur-Célé, on the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela, exudes tranquillity and is bathed in the freshness of the banks of the river Célé. The Pech Merle cave is one of the finest examples of cave art in France. We're in the heart of the Parc des Causses du Quercy, a veritable paradise for hikers. For a bite to eat: "Le Sombral", located in the main square in the village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, serves the legendary local trout poached in Cahors red wine. In Cajarc, the bistronomic restaurant "L'Allée des Vignes" serves a complete discovery of Quercy saffron cuisine.
The mill consists of two buildings: the miller's house and the dovecote tower, with a capacity of ten people. The house has a large living/dining room, three bedrooms and a kitchen with access to a terrace for meals, which connects the house to the tower. The tower has a further terrace with a table seating twelve. The tower comprises two bedrooms and a lounge/bar opening onto the pool terrace.
