Clinging to the hillside beneath the ancient walls of Ménerbes, one of the most emblematic villages in the Luberon, the Tinal bastide fits into this environment of stone and Provence vegetation perfectly. Entirely renovated to welcome guests in comfort, the exterior has retained a beautiful patina that hints at its centuries-old history. Inside, the atmosphere varies from contemporary to the old-fashioned charm of a family home. There is clearly something for everyone here, whatever they are looking for. But in this land of sunshine and cicadas, aren't the main rooms the garden and terraces? From here, you can look out over a gently rolling landscape of crops and woodland, with Mount Ventoux in the distance. How can anyone tire of such a show?
It was love at first sight, when we were on a road trip through Provence. The region won us over with its changing light, diverse landscapes and peaceful ambience. Here, you can hop from one village to a market, from a mountain range to an orchard, without ever getting bored. Each village perched on the Luberon mountains has its own charm, and from the house, the view is breathtaking. The Calavon valley stretches all the way to Mont Ventoux. The village of Ménerbes is steeped in history and artistic culture thanks to the many famous people who have stayed here. It is a Provence that is alive all year round, warm and discreet at the same time, vibrant without being overexposed, rural but refined. We have found a rare balance between raw beauty and a gentle way of life.
The Bastide has retained all the charm of Provencal buildings: tiled floors, basket-handle vaulted rooms, exposed Ménerbes stone walls and Provencal-style ceilings. Some of the living rooms were once used to store mulberry branches, essential for feeding silkworms. The property is set in the foothills of the village of Ménerbes. Its garden, laid out in terraces, has a diversity of spaces and unique viewpoints to offer. A real little hamlet in itself, deeply rooted in local rural history, the Bastide has been carefully restored to offer every modern comfort: each room is air-conditioned and has its own bathroom. The house, which is both functional and well-preserved, exudes typical Provencal charm. Adapted to the topography of the land, it extends over several levels, providing a range of living spaces that provide both conviviality and privacy.
A former silkworm farm dating back to the 18th century, the bastide was once dedicated to rearing silkworms, known in Provence as "magnans". Sericulture, or silk craftsmanship, became one of the region's big specialities in the 19th century, before disappearing at the end of the same century. A well, an orchard and olive trees are the crowning glory of this place, which is both a house and a former farm, nestling under a bell tower topped by its wrought-iron campanile. It is a house with deep roots, weathered by time, and a witness to the passing seasons.
Ménerbes lies at the heart of the Luberon Regional Nature Park. Our house is an ideal base to discover all the region has on offer from, surrounded by hilltop villages, vineyards and the emblematic Provence roads. Nature lovers, history buffs and contemporary art enthusiasts all come here to enjoy a relaxed way of life. La Bastide offers total immersion in this unique landscape thanks to its breathtaking views. Its many terraces and nooks and crannies invite you to contemplate the surroundings and spend time together, facing the Luberon and Mont Ventoux. Each space calls on its guests to read, have lunch, get together or simply enjoy the moment, in a peaceful, authentic atmosphere.
La Bastide is just a seven-minute walk from the village of Ménerbes. We warmly recommend "La Table de l'Épicier", a friendly place serving local cuisine, run by a couple who are both passionate and welcoming. And don't miss the Petit Palais farmers' market in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue: a real market, rarely visited by tourists, held every Saturday from March onwards. For lunch with a wonderful view, the "Café de France" in Lacoste is a well-kept secret. And for a generous dinner, "Le Mas aux Imberts", on the road to Gordes, serves refined, hearty cuisine, accompanied by an exceptional wine list featuring local producers.
