A country manor house built over four centuries (15th-18th)west of Tours, in Indre-et-Loire

Our opinion

Set amidst fertile farmland bordered by the Cher river, the manor house looks back on centuries of history at the end of a long tree-lined driveway. The various buildings, varying in proportion and with their slate or tile roofs, form an almost perfect square, a kind of mineral island with a structured garden. Inside, it feels like everything has always been there, in an elegant combination of styles, materials, colours, furnishings, objects and mementos added over the generations. Guests here will feel like part of the family or that they have been specially invited and feel right at home.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

I'm very attached to this region. It has been home to my family since the second half of the 19th century, and I myself grew up on the estate.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

The manor house comprises a group of buildings arranged around a large square courtyard. Its architecture is highly original, harmoniously blending four very distinct centuries of our history, from the 15th to the 18th century. The main building covers an area of 400 m² and has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1948. It includes a lounge with a wooden fireplace. A small chapel, set against the gable end of the main house, dates back to the 16th century. The garden, created by Joachim Carvallo, founder of the Jardins de Villandry and a family friend, is a haven of peace, guaranteeing calm and serenity.

What is its history ?

Owned by our family for nearly a century, the manor was acquired in 1927 by our grandfather, the writer and lecturer René Benjamin - winner of the 1915 Prix Goncourt - who lived here until his death in 1948.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

The manor house is located in the countryside, surrounded by 20 hectares of wheat fields, in a village not far from Tours. With excellent east-west exposure, the house benefits from the soft light of Tours, with generous volumes and spacious rooms. This residence embodies a certain French art de vivre. It also houses family furniture passed down through the generations, some of which comes from the Château de Saché, now the Balzac Museum. A filtered pool in the garden invites guests to take a refreshing dip on hot days with a children’s swimming area. On-site wellness activities can be organised on request, including massages, relaxation, yoga, meditation, Pilates and stretching.

Places you would personally recommend

"La Maison Tourangelle", behind the façade of a former 18th-century priory in Savonnières, and "La Cabane à Matelot", specialising in Loire river fish in Bréhémont, are two of the finest restaurants in France. In Villandry, “L'Étape Gourmande” serves traditional food, while “L'Épicerie Gourmande” is a wine bar and delicatessen. "Le Gosier Sec", a troglodyte restaurant dug into the tufa rock, a former cellar which was once used to store wine and fruit. The Savonnières market on Saturday mornings and the Langeais market on Sunday mornings. In Ballan-Miré, just two kilometres from the house, the Touraine golf course is one of the most beautiful in France.
