Long gone are the days when the wheel, powered by the powerful water in the millstream, drove the noisy stone millstone! The mill and its outbuildings have now been converted into a holiday home, inspiring calm and relaxation in the heart of nature, less than two hours from Paris. The owner's English origins no doubt influenced the design of the property which is fashioned as an easy-going cottage where everything is designed for comfortable, cosy stays. Whether it's a game of tennis, a swim in the pool, a boules competition or just lazing by the waterside, there's something to suit everybody's ideas of a relaxing weekend or holiday.
My wife grew up in a beautiful house in the Wiltshire countryside in England. The hills, valleys and streams of our region reminded her of her native Woodford Valley. Le Moulin is a family project, a place of happiness, freedom, creativity and contemplation for adults and children.
Situated in a three-hectare patch of greenery, this former mill, listed as a "heritage feature to be protected" and fed by a millstream, backs onto a wooded hillside. Our renovation project focused on unifying all the architectural details to enhance the dominant character of the neo-Gothic manor house and to bring greater coherence to the whole property. The property is completed by some former farm buildings grouped together around a small courtyard and converted into a second house and service annexes.
Our mill is part of a group of seven watermills and washhouses between the villages of Gilles and Guainville. Under the Merovingians, Gilles belonged to the royal domain. Around 700 AD, the king ceded Gilles and two mills - l'Étang and La Boissière - to the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. During the Middle Ages, seigneuries and religious orders shared this region on the borders of Ile-de-France, with its fortresses built to defend against Norman incursions. Our mill was still in operation until the 1940s, and a section of the wheel has been preserved and can be seen in the grounds.
The property is set in a natural environment made up of woods, meadows and streams. It has over three hectares of grounds, a heated swimming pool, a grass tennis court and a boules pitch. Here, children can be free and safe. They can have fun on the tree climbing course which has a small zip line! Bikes, roller boards, yoga accessories, boxing and badminton bags, trampolines, swings and table football are also available. A billiards table, an art area and a small puppet theatre complete the available activities. Added to this can be the pleasure of collecting eggs from our henhouse and meeting our Ouessant sheep. A selection of fresh, organic, seasonal fruit and vegetables is available in the kitchen garden and orchard. Our market gardener will be delighted to involve you in his work or to help you discover wild plants with therapeutic properties.
