Nestling in a valley with wooded slopes stretching right down to the banks of the Siagne, the old mill is only visible to those who know it is there, which now includes guests too. It is the perfect picture of a mill as we would imagine it: clear river water murmuring as it swirls down between the exposed rocks, a narrow stone bridge that spans the river where sacks of wheat were once carried across on the backs of mules, the cool shady natural surroundings that protect it from the scorching Provencal summer sun, the building built from typical regional stone. This image which is a feat for the eyes of any artist, doesn't give away anything about the interior, which holds many surprises. The white in every room is enhanced by a few touches of colour and the light wood of the furniture, and matched by the nuances of the travertine stone or the white parquet floors, bringing an unexpected sparkle to the two adjoining houses. Two worlds come together in a beautiful balance, respectful of the past yet meeting the demands of modern comfort.
When we arrived in the region, we were charmed by the property's exceptional natural surroundings and the river. It was love at first sight - somewhere away from prying eyes, far from the hustle and bustle of the city and pollution.
The stone mill was built in 1852-1853 and was later extended. We completely renovated the two buildings to rearrange and enlarge the rooms. We kept the thick walls, which ensure a pleasant cool interior in the summer. The windows in the living room have been enlarged to let in more light and provide a breath-taking view of nature. The property is ideally situated along a first category classified river and even has its own bridge dating back to the early 19th century. What's more, it is set on 14 hectares of land, guaranteeing total privacy, with no direct neighbours.
The Moulin de la Moutte was built around 1853 by Claude Robert, who came from Escragnolles. Built on land bordering the River Siagne, it was used to produce flour and for fulling cloth. On his return from the island of Elba, Napoleon took the chemin de la Siagne in Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey, rather than the road now known as the Route Napoléon (RN 85). In 1815, because of the poor state of the road, Napoleon was forced to abandon his cannons and carriages in Grasse, continue his journey on horseback and have his equipment transported on mules. In 1817, the Royal Road between Antibes and Sisteron was a vital route for the commodities trade. At the time, the mountains were a source of wheat supply to the coastal towns and the surrounding plain. They also supplied meat, sheep's wool and mules, which were renowned for their hardiness.
A breath of fresh air in the middle of nature. Sheltered from prying eyes, nestling in a protected 14-hectare estate on the heights of Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey, this little gem made up of a 300 m2 former mill and a 170 m2 annex is an invitation to enjoy a gentle way of life in a natural environment without compromising on comfort. The sound of the spring-fed river calls on you to recharge your batteries, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It is a break in harmony with nature for couples, families or friends.
Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey, a stopover on the Route Napoléon à Cheval, is home to the Stèle equestrian centre. You can hike from Saint-Vallier to Escragnolles. Another suggestion is to walk to the top of the Montagne de Thiey via the canals and the Nans forest, which is one of the most beautiful lookouts in the Grasse region. You will have views over the Côte d'Azur, the Var and the Mercantour to the north. There are markets every Friday and Sunday throughout the year. Sunday at the Grand Pré from 8 am to 6 pm and Friday from 8 am to 1 pm at Place Saint Roc. For local products: "La ruche qui dit oui" and "Le potager de Thiey". "Les cochons de la Côte d'Azur" (organic) in Saint-Cézaire-sur-Siagne and "Benso organic olive oil" in Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey.
