A completely renovated 19th-century country house
and its farm south of Périgueux, in the Périgord Noir region

Our opinion

With its wise and well-ordered appearance, on one long single level, the country house lives up to its name. It was built, like many others, at a time when the bourgeoisie enjoyed the charms of holidaying in the Périgord countryside. A century and a half later, the manor house has returned to its original purpose, which it now combines with the old farmhouse that accompanies it. The layout of the rooms, the furnishings and decor, the harmonious blend of old and new are all designed to make you feel carefree and light-hearted, allowing you to enjoy the simple pleasure of being together with family or friends. And if you want to broaden your horizons, the surrounding countryside and its treasures, including the region's famous truffles, are bound to offer some fascinating discoveries.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

I'm a local. I was brought up near the village of Sainte-Alvère, where my paternal grandparents settled in 1950. I even went to school in the village! We didn't plan to buy this house at all. It came to us by surprise. We were living abroad when we visited the Chartreuse des Ormeaux, which had just been put up for sale. We fell in love at first sight and we made an offer the very next day! That was 20 years ago. For me, the Dordogne was a place to enjoy with my family, a friendly base full of charm to welcome friends and children. The country house became a real family home, perfect for reunions of young and old alike.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

A typical country house with large windows that enable both indoor and outdoor living, set on two terraces that make it easy to enjoy the outdoors. Upstairs, the bedrooms are beautifully appointed, which was unusual in older country houses, where the attic space was reserved for the staff. The house's charm is enhanced by its position in a courtyard, adjoining what was once a farmhouse, made “chic” or more “upper class” thanks to a majestic dovecote and ancient trees planted when the building was constructed, including magnolias on the terrace and a spectacular Lebanese cedar.

What is its history ?

The Chartreuse des Ormeaux dates back to the second half of the 19th century. It was built by a Périgord family who used it as a holiday resort and who benefited from the farm's produce and wine. The country house was surrounded by vineyards and had a wine-growing and agricultural activity. The house remained in the same family until, after the Second World War it was bequeathed to the Legion of Honour, which kept it for many years as a summer residence for its pensioners. It was then bought by a German impressionist painter, who lived here for 20 years before selling it to us in 2006.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

A property comprising two houses set in four hectares of landscaped parkland with ancient trees. A place to celebrate life and special occasions: birthdays, family receptions, get-togethers. Musicians are welcome to use the grand piano. Guests are made to feel at home here. On request, we can do the shopping before guests arrive and prepare meals for them which we can leave in the fridge. The village of Saint Alvère is within walking distance and has all the local shops you need. We offer our guests a discovery of the village's truffle market, to give them an insight into how the black gold of Périgord is sold. We have opened up a small decorating boutique called "La Curieuse Boutique” on site, which is a lovely place to buy items for the home or small gifts.

Places you would personally recommend

In the village, make sure you stop off at "Chez Laurent Collet", a foie gras producer behind the church, or "Chez Cathy et Venan" with their Kanoreva brand of coffee, or at the village grocery shop offering delicious ice creams and sorbets from "Safran d'Olga". The village is famous for its truffle market every Monday morning in the winter and its farmers' markets and night markets in the summer. At the same market, David and Marianne Dupuy's bread deserves all your attention and a little patience while waiting in the queue! In Le Bugue, don't miss the "Maison Paysanne", offering products from local producers. The Napoleon Museum at Château de la Pommerie. It is my parents' home and my childhood home. In Beaumont-du-Périgord, the "Quincaillerie de Beaumont" is a veritable treasure trove of local and international finds.
