Les Hauts de Chaunac is a spectacular feat. It was the project of its builder who, in the 1970s, wanted to build a country manor house on his land in memory of his family. It was later renovated by the current owners, with the aim of both enhancing the noble Périgord residence surrounded by formal gardens, and at the same time meeting the demands for modern, high-level comfort. Perched high on the wooded hillsides bordering the Dordogne, with uninterrupted views over the surrounding countryside, the house is sure to appeal to lovers of the Périgord Noir region, and to those who have not yet had the pleasure of discovering this beautiful region.
We are Belgian, but our family was French before the Revolution. We are descendants of Marguerite Yourcenar - an anagram of Crayencour - the first woman elected to the Académie française in 1980. She was our great-great aunt! This property is for us like returning back to our "motherland". We chose it for its charm and its breath-taking views over the Dordogne valley, but also because we are particularly fond of this region in France because of its art de vivre, gastronomy and its 1001 chateaux.
The Périgord manor house is set in a dominant position with a 180° view over the Dordogne valley. The rectangular building has three floors including a converted attic and a basement. It has a steeply pitched hipped roof covered in flat terracotta tiles and with Jacobean dormer windows. The facades are covered in Mauzens stone and feature windows and French windows. Outside, terraces line the south and west sides of the house. Gently sloping stone steps lead down to the grounds.
The manor house was built in the 1970s by Gérard de Chaunac, mayor of Vitrac from 1983 to 1999. Born into a 700-year-old aristocratic family, Viscount de Chaunac wanted this place to be a copy of the chateau his family owned in the Sarladais region before the French Revolution. We acquired it in 2019 and have just finished renovating it after three years’ work.
It is both a secluded spot, surrounded by eight hectares of green, five hectares of which are woodland and three gardens, yet just six kilometres from Sarlat. A remarkable setting full of beauty, harmony and tranquillity, enhanced by a formal French garden. There is a concierge service to meet all of our guests' needs and expectations: catering, guides, massages, housekeepers.
The restaurants "Lo Gorissado" in Saint-André-d'Allas, "Ô Plaisir des sens" in La Roque-Gageac and "L'Hôtel Dieu" in Sarlat. "Le Moulin du Trel", dating back to the 12th century, where you can watch walnut oil being made in traditional fashion and enjoy a tasting session. "La Ferme de Turnac" in Domme, a foie gras producer and processor and organic walnut producer. “Chez Pierrô" a cheese dairy in Sarlat, whose maturing and tasting cellars are housed in the former Hôtel de Génis, a listed historic monument. "Le café Layac" in Vitrac for its traditional wood-fired roasting. The "Jardins d'Eau à Carsac", a real aquatic arboretum. “Mystery & Light Evenings" at Château de Commarque in July and August.
