A former Jesuit monastery dating back to the
16th and 17th centuries near Évora in the Alentejo

Our opinion

Portugal never ceases to reveal its treasures. Not far from the medieval city of Évora, where many of the country's national monuments can be found, Castelo Ventoso is a moving example of the country's Baroque architecture. In the golden Alentejo countryside, dotted with cork oaks and olive trees, the former Jesuit monastery has lost none of the principles that inspired its construction: a sober, harmonious beauty designed to touch the heart. Its gentle, delicate renovation has preserved its peaceful atmosphere while adding a sensitive contemporary touch. Opening out onto the surrounding countryside, the house is an oasis of freshness and tranquillity, where you can recharge your batteries naturally. "Sejam bem-vidos!”

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

My husband was born and raised in Évora and we are very attached to this region. After settling down on his family's farm, we discovered this nearby monastery. At the time, we had no plans to buy anything else as we had just restored our own property, but we were immediately won over by the character and authenticity of the setting and its remarkable, unspoilt natural environment. In 2018, we bought the place with two other families, one from Alentejo and the other a Dutch family from Amsterdam.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

The estate is surrounded by 300 hectares of cork oak, reflecting the predominant agriculture of the Alentejo. The building, a former monastery dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, combines Jesuit heritage and strong Baroque architecture with modern elegance. Every nook and cranny tells a story, with carefully preserved historical features such as the original chapel, soaring vaulted ceilings and hand-painted 18th-century azulejos. Outside, you can still see the original benches and the old irrigation system. A contemporary extension was built to house the kitchen, combining glass and wood with local materials, notably granite and marble from neighbouring villages.

What is its history ?

The estate is a traditional montado: an agroforestry system characterised by trees planted at low density, combined with agricultural or pastoral activity. It is home to cork oak forests, grazing sheep, ancient olive trees and even the remains of a Roman road. At its heart there is a 16th-century monastery, once occupied by Jesuits who used it as a refuge to meditate between courses at the University of Évora. Following the dissolution of the order and its expulsion from Portugal in 1759, the property reverted to the crown, before passing into the hands of a family of Portuguese aristocrats for 250 years. We are only the third owners to look after this site in almost five centuries of history.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

We offer an inspiring getaway where past and present, nature and history coexist harmoniously in the heart of a property that reflects the heritage of the Alentejo. The uniqueness of this “sanctuary” is that it exudes a timeless charm. Magnificent panoramic views, ancient cork oaks, the remains of a Roman road and the monastery at its heart make every corner a place steeped in history and imbued with a subtle elegance. The rooms are serviced every morning and a chef is available on request. At the heart of the estate there is a private padel court, a boules court and a swimming pool.
