At first glance, nothing hints at the agricultural and undoubtedly modest origins of this villa. Extensively renovated, it has vast spaces punctuated by an alternation of pristine white and deep black, creating a kind of decorative piano keyboard that animates all the rooms. However, the contemporary spirit that pervades has not replaced the soul of the "finca" notably the patio with its refreshing plunge pool, the terraces that surround the house, and the shade of the pergola. Here, you can enjoy living in past while benefiting from modern comforts on the northernmost volcanic island of the Canaries, less frequented than its larger southern neighbours.
Arriving in Lanzarote in 1989, I discovered a stark, mineral landscape where a life story quickly took root. I met my husband, and one thing became clear: we needed to find an old finca, a place that embodied both a vision and a purpose. So, we acquired this property, which we patiently restored, room by room, striving for a balance between comfort and fidelity to its original character. In 1996, setting sail for the open seas opened a new chapter. Travel became a school of observation and attention to detail for us. From these experiences a way of welcoming guests to holiday homes emerged, offering everyone the experience of inhabiting a place designed with exacting standards, inspired by other cultures yet deeply rooted in its own traditions.
This finca embodies an inward-looking architecture, dictated by the climate. Few openings, thick stone walls, and a layout centred on sheltered spaces. Here, life is lived in seclusion. The house has been delicately transformed, inspired by the work of César Manrique. The volumes have been opened up, the ceilings raised, up to six meters, to bring light and airiness, while respecting the original spirit. The former patio has become a living room, and the agricultural rooms, once fragmented, have found fluidity and spaciousness. In Guatiza, a former cochineal-growing region, the house engages in a dialogue with its landscape, not far from the cactus garden designed by Manrique, extending a harmony that lies between tradition and innovation.
When we acquired it, the finca was already 220 years old. A former farmhouse organized around a patio, it held the memory of a land dedicated to the cultivation of cochineal, the precious pigment derived from cacti. The transformation was radical yet respectful: small rooms were opened up, volumes reinvented, and ceilings raised to over five metres to confer light and a sense of spaciousness. The former interior garden became a living room, while certain traces, visible in period photographs, still bear witness to the original agricultural life. In Guatiza, this house engages in a dialogue with its history. Nearby, the Cactus Garden, a work by César Manrique, extends this heritage, blending sculpted nature with contemporary creations.
Designed as a true home, this finca blends contemporary comfort with island charm. The fully equipped kitchen is centred around a large wood-fired oven, inviting relaxed and convivial gatherings. Outside, a year-round heated pool (29°C) extends enjoyment throughout the seasons. A sauna and fitness area complete the amenities. The secluded and private garden is arranged around an olive tree and a pergola, offering exceptional privacy. On the opposite side, a second terrace opens onto the village and surrounding hills, perfect for enjoying the fading light. The availability of various equipment, such as bicycles, bodyboards, surfboards, and golf clubs, allows guests to fully appreciate the surrounding area and its activities.
Around Guatiza, local life can be discovered at a leisurely pace. The village, discreet but lively, has a few typical restaurants such as "La Tasca de Lita", prized for its authenticity, or the "Teleclub", which is simple and friendly. In Mala, "Arepera Jojoto y Millo” serves family-style cuisine with Venezuelan and Colombian influences. The surrounding area also has beautiful escapes, including the Cactus Garden, a work by César Manrique, or the suspended Mirador del Río, which faces the ocean. Craft enthusiasts will find their bliss at "Atelier Guttenberger". On the coast, Playa de Famara attracts surfers, while Playa de la Garita invites swimming. Finally, Teguise and Haría reveal markets and boutiques with their unspoiled charm.
