Artists who have lived and worked in the region have left their mark here to inspire those who follow in their footsteps. Many of these traces, both visible and invisible, can be found at l’Atelier. For more than thirty years, Antoni Clavé painted, engraved and sculpted between these walls to produce remarkable work that is known around the world. Since his time here, the house has been transformed, modernised, adorned with colours, and opened up to other artists. But the same spirit remains a constant, much like the surrounding landscape which is miraculously unchanged. Behind a cleverly composed curtain of greenery, the bay of Canoubiers opens its arms. With a regal and sparkling presence on crystal clear waters, it superbly detaches itself the hustle and bustle of Saint-Tropez which is nevertheless close by. What could be better than surrendering yourself to the beauty of a site that brought so much inspiration to a world renowned artist?
This has been the region of light artists since the turn of the century. Saint-Tropez was a place of artistic creation for the likes of Paul Signac, Matisse and Braque. The Cap Saint-Pierre, at the end of the bay of Canoubiers, is a well-preserved spot surrounded by wild nature. That was all I needed to be inspired by the region!
The property is on one level and has a surface area of 200m2. L'Atelier has been completely restored but has nevertheless retained its original soul and the traces of its design: concrete, iron beams, large interior volumes and large windows that flood the spaces with light. The imprint of my artistic sensibility perpetuates the property's artistic past and pays tribute to creation through numerous works of art and furniture designed by contemporary designers and artists.
The house was once the printmaking studio of Antoni Clavé, an internationally renowned Catalan artist and friend of Picasso. Antoni Clavé (who was born on 5 April 1913 in Barcelona and died on 31 August 2005 in Saint-Tropez) was a painter, engraver and sculptor. In 1965, he moved to the South of France. In the 1970s, he bought this land at the water's edge in the Bay of Canoubiers in order to set up a workplace that would inspire creation in the middle of nature. L'Atelier has recently been transformed into a holiday home open to guests in search of a unique destination.
Ideally located, the Atelier stands at the edge of the bay of Caroubiers. It is just a few steps from La Madrague, the home of Brigitte Bardot, which has kept all the wild and natural authenticity of the 70s making it utterly unique in Saint-Tropez. L'Atelier is surrounded by a 5,000m2 garden. It was created by Ossart and Maurières (landscapers and dry garden specialist) who added a magical touch by planting it with more than eighty species of Mediterranean shrub plants. Glimpses of the blue of the sea can be spotted through gaps in the reeds. Guests will experience the joy of getting up in the morning to cross the tamarisks and reeds, take a dip in the sea and dry off in the sun on the pontoon just a few meters from the house!
Stroll along the Chemin du Littéral, explore the wild coastline, take a peek at Colette's house, or visit La Treille Muscate.’Explore the vineyards of the Donadio family just a stone's throw from l'Atelier, then taste their excellent wines from Domaine Cap Saint-Pierre on the outskirts of Saint-Tropez. Visit the Annonciade museum which showcases Fauve masterpieces by Derain and Matisse. Finish at Le Muy with a visit to the fantastic Bernar Venet Foundation.
