Along these narrow streets, bare stone and lime coated facades follow one another in a picturesque procession of yellow and ochre hues. Just a few steps from the forecourt of the church and its bell tower, the grey-green shutters of the Perroya are hard to miss, beckoning visitors to step inside and shelter from the sun. The property features a perfect combination of the spirit of a family home decorated with memories of travels and that of a hotel that welcomes guests with refinement and discretion. Designed as a refuge, the house perfectly fulfils its soothing role at the end of long days exploring everything the region has to offer.
Originally from the Lyon region, and as an interior designer based in Paris, I started looking for my "project" house in 2019. This one ticked all the boxes: an old house, in the heart of an old village, and clearly in need of major restoration work. As I had spent most of my holidays in Gigondas for many years, this choice also allowed me to move closer to friends who had settled in the region as well as to my family, who have been living in Provence for more than thirty years.
La Perroya comes from the Middle French "perroyer" (meaning to extract stone) and from the Latin "perreator" (meaning stonemason or lapidary) and "petra" (meaning stone). Built in stone on three levels, La Perroya is arranged around a large central courtyard. It is a modest house marked with a stone dated 1830. It nevertheless bears the traces of important architectural features. A beautiful stone staircase, which has also modified, appears to date back further than 1830. Located 47 steps from the church, hence it being number 47, the property houses the village bread oven behind the chimney which is also a sign of earlier times.
This village house, the whole history of which I have not yet unearthed, is located on the church square in the centre of the old village of Visan. Coins were once minted in this noble and historical centre. The papal residences and the many mansions of the rue des Nobles and the Hôtel de Pelissier, which are listed as Historic Monuments, are testimony to this prosperous period. The house had already been transformed in the 1980s. After eight months of heavy restoration work which was undertaken with the help of local craftsmen to restore the property's simplicity and enhance it with modern comforts, La Perroya opened its doors in the summer of 2021. The house thus embodies the accomplishment of twenty-five years of expertise.
The house is ideally located for exploring the region, in the heart of Vaucluse and Drôme Provençale. It is a haven of calm, disturbed only by the chiming of the church bells. Each of the rooms, featuring antiques, objects from a distance past and many well-loved books, invite guests to relax. The small pool in the courtyard is perfect for refreshing yourself. The large terrace with a view of the Rhone Valley offers views of magnificent sunsets in the cooler hours of the summer. During their stay, guests have access to the ground floor of the house to enjoy the living room, the library, and the fireplace during long winter evenings. Breakfasts are made exclusively with homemade or local products. Aperitif boards can be served in the courtyard or on the terrace, and the tables d'hôtes can be reserved on request.
The ridge trail with a view of the Dentelles de Montmirail and Mont-Ventoux is a loop between the two Chapels and a mountain bike circuit. Follow paths through the middle of oaks and pines along the ridge towards Vinsobre. Walk through vineyards on the loop from Buisson to Villedieu. Visit the markets of Vaison-la-Romaine on Tuesday morning, Sainte-Cécile-les-Vignes on Saturday morning and the truffle market of Richerenches from December to mid-March. Good restaurants include Le Brigand in a small courtyard in Suze-la-Rousse, and the Bistro Panoramique which boasts far-reaching views of Vaison-la-Romaine. Le Lou Canesteou is an excellent cheese shop in Vaison-la-Romaine. Try Nyons olives and truffles at Volabis, a delicatessen in Richerenches. Visit the Estau farm in Visan which sells seasonal fruit and vegetables and free-range poultry. The Domaine des Frères Arnaud in Villedieu or the Domaine de la Gontarde in Visan develop natural wine cuvées with entirely manual vinification methods.
