In the middle of vineyards, where Provence flattens out as if to better magnify the surrounding hills, the Domaine de l'Ameillaud is a small hamlet containing several houses. The two holiday homes have been renovated with the aim of combining vernacular architecture with a contemporary feel, with the occasional hint of industrial inspiration. The garden, surrounded by a sea of gnarled vines, is a celebration of this sun-drenched region, full of fragrance and lulled by the song of the cicadas. Visitors will come to discover the many treasures of northern Provence, inspiring architecture and history lovers, as well as nature lovers and walkers. But enthusiasts of the Rhone Valley will also have a front-row seat to discover the secrets of viticulture and winemaking using local grape varieties.
L'Ameillaud has been in my family for several generations. My grandfather inherited this 90-hectare wine estate. I've always been very attached to my southern roots. My husband, a British gentleman farmer, had an uncle who was a "Master of Wine” and who passed his interest in wine onto him. We both wanted to go back to the countryside because of our respective origins, and we were looking for a project to work on together. We seized the opportunity to take over what was then just a family farm and adapt it with our vision and touch. We had a big challenge ahead of us. There was a lot of brick and a large expanse of wine-growing land that needed to be structured.
A group of buildings laid out in a U-shape around a courtyard dedicated to housing and wine production, all surrounded by a vineyard. The original farmhouse, built in the 19th century, has been extended over the years with the successive generations. The first builders carefully chose a site where there was water. There are five springs here. In the 1825’s, a small Provençal-style house was built, now known as La Source. Nestled between the back of a typical building and the old wine-making cellar, Mas Meyeau, a gite located in the former stables, has kept its original structure with large windows that open onto the inner courtyard, giving it peace and privacy, yet letting subtle light in throughout the day.
The Domaine de l'Ameillaud wine estate has a long history dating back some 200 years. My grandfather had a vineyard manager who looked after the vineyards and made wine on site, which was only sold in bulk. In 1983, he invited us to manage the estate and that was that. We both took courses at the Beaune wine school. After his death in 1991, we bought part of the estate from his heirs. We initially concentrated our efforts on the vines. Then came time for renovations, starting with the estate's former stables, which we restored and designed with the help of an interior designer friend, to make the first location for our gite business. We have now entrusted the vineyard to a young winemaker and devote ourselves to welcoming our guests.
A place shaded by century-old plane trees, far from the crowds yet close to everything. Close to Vaison-La-Romaine, dominated by Mont Ventoux and facing the Dentelles de Montmirail, our guests can spend peaceful days in the centre of a land of wine and prestigious appellations, particularly in the heart of the Cairanne vineyards. Formerly a winemaker on the family estate, my husband now devotes himself to passing on his know-how and sharing the knowledge he has acquired over 40 years in the trade. He offers our guests an exclusive two-hour "In-House Wine Class", as well as a "Wine-Tour" in Châteauneuf du Pape, off the beaten track, consisting of a visit to the cellars and wine tasting at two estates he has selected.
Lose yourself in the streets of the old town of Vaison-la-Romaine and dine at "Lum" with its inventive food and warm welcome. Discover the cuisine at the Michelin-starred restaurant "l'Oustalet" in Gigondas. Taste the village's winemakers’ wines at the brand new Caveau du Cairanne. Visit Villedieu's typical Provence-style square for a drink, an ice cream or a meal at "Le Bistrot de Villedieu". Take a stroll through the hilltop village of Séguret, listed as a remarkable village, and admire the view across the plain. Visit France's last remaining “scourtinerie”, which has been perpetuating its coir-making expertise for 130 years, and Sybille Friedel's painting and sculpture studio in Pernes-les-Fontaines. A street market every Saturday morning in Sainte-Cécile-Les-Vignes. Les Dentelles de Montmirail, a 108km2 massif located between the Rhône valley and Mont Ventoux, offer superb panoramic views over the Vaucluse and are accessible to hikers of all abilities.
