Two 17th-century houses on an estate dedicated to holiday
rentals in the village of Lancharre, in Saône-et-Loire

Our opinion

The Clos des Dames estate features two independent places to stay in the heart of the village, dominated by its nearby Romanesque church. Clad in repointed stone and topped with traditional Burgundy tiles, the houses form a small, walled estate within which several acres of vineyards have been planted. Carefully renovated and decorated in a contemporary style, they offer a warm and comfortable setting for peaceful stays. The garden and lap pool allow guests to unwind after exploring southern Burgundy, where lovers of history, architecture, nature, and fine dining will find everything they’re looking for.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

For many years, Burgundy was a familiar destination for us, where we regularly returned to visit close friends living not far from Chapaize. This village has always captivated me with its peaceful charm and authenticity. When my husband mentioned the idea of buying a property, I immediately focused our search on this place. Its restoration took nearly four years of work, slowed down by the lockdown period but also by heritage restrictions due to its proximity to the 11th-century Romanesque church. Now restored, the house blends in naturally with the village landscape, and we feel as though we have simply revealed the harmony that was already dormant within it.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

Architecturally, the house defies any strict classification. Its origins, likely from the 16th or 17th centuries, are visible in layers, enriched by significant alterations from the 19th century. On one gable, the imprint of the original shape remains, a discreet vestige of its early stages. The main body, more geometric and almost square, reflects this evolution. A former dovecote, now converted into a library, extends the older parts. Nearby, large patio doors open onto a reception room of about 60 m², where moments can be shared together.

What is its history ?

Le Clos des Dames de l’Anchard is full of history tinged with legend. During the Crusades, the Lord of Brancion set out for Jerusalem, taking many local lords with him. Many did not return, leaving behind widows. These women were given a piece of land, l’Anchard, where a free community was born, inspired by the beguinages, consisting of adjoining houses open to women, whether they were religious or not. Over time, the Church forced them to be integrated into the Order of Saint Benedict, and the community left for Chalon. All that remains today is the church choir, a masterpiece of purity. The houses were gradually sold off individually, before being largely all brought back together by the Lombard family, until we acquired them.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

The hamlet of L’Anchard, home to just a handful of people, reveals its light-drenched stone houses on the edge of the national forest. Here, time seems to stand still: shaded paths, secluded clearings, and fragrant undergrowth invite you to go on long walks or bike rides. Set within four hectares of land, the Clos unfolds with its swimming pool, vegetable garden, and vineyards, like an intimate landscape. Staying here means attuning oneself to the slow rhythm of the days and the poetry of the place. The estate also offers a variety of activities—pilates, meditation, massages, yoga, vegetarian cuisine, or vineyard tours—extending this rejuvenating experience.

Places you would personally recommend

"La Table de Chapaize," in the heart of the village, blends quality with Burgundian authenticity. The splendid 16th-century Château de Cormatin and the must-see Cluny Abbey highlight the region’s heritage. The region also invites you to enjoy outdoor activities: canoeing down the Saône, cycling back, exploring the greenways, horseback riding in Cluny, or taking long walks in the Chapaize state forest.
