A cliff dropping down to the water and the beach, nothing but the the Mediterranean sea and the bay of Cassis on the horizon, a vast wooded area and endless reception rooms and bedrooms. Sometimes, reality goes beyond the wildest of dreams. The Canaille estate is a rare place that combines a well preserved seashore bursting with nature, distance from the hustle and bustle of the Côte d'Azur, a feeling of limitless space and exceptional comfort. The refined decoration takes something of a back seat so that everyone can appreciate the spectacle offered at the top of this lookout above the waves. Guests will feel the "eternity" that is "the sea mixed with the sun", as Rimbaud once wrote.
As a child, I spent all my summers in a large family home near Toulon on the French Riviera, and I have always loved this place. The surroundings of my property bring back many childhood memories. I always wanted the Domaine de Canaille to reflect the same family spirit. It was above all the breathtaking view that made us fall in love with the area. From the south terrace, we can see the whole of the bay of Cassis, the Arena beach and the Calanques surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean.
It is a stone building dating back to the end of the 19th century. We made an effort to respect the property's history as it had been damaged by the previous owners in the 60's. The villa is located in Cassis, a charming fishing town with a lot of history. The estate consists of protected land within the Calanques National Park. The spirit of the 19th century lives on through the north facade, whilst the south facade has been modernised with large bay windows, which, from the living room, give the impression of being at the bow of a boat. The greatest architectural achievement is probably the huge two-storey glass wall providing a view of the sea - the idea came from our architect, Julien Rhinn. The size of the property is a huge advantage - with its sixty hectares of protected land, the villa remains isolated from other houses.
Built at the end of the 19th century, above the Arena beach, the former Revestel hotel was a guesthouse that welcomed prestigious clients until the end of the 1950s. Winston Churchill and Virginia Woolf stayed here during their holidays in Cassis, a village that was dear to their hearts. After it was abandoned for a few years, the hotel was taken over by a Marseille family who wanted to transform it into a large thalassotherapy centre. The project failed as some Cassidains were fiercely opposed to it. We bought the property in 2017. After a complete renovation, we turned it into a villa combining modernity, simplicity and comfort. The Domaine de Canaille's new name comes from the majestic cliff that stands 399 metres above it - the Cap Canaille - the second highest maritime cliff in Europe.
The Domaine de Canaille is a property that combines calm and serenity. The huge 600m2 house and the 60 hectare park provide more than enough space for friends and family to gather. The incredible view of the Calanques National Park is also a real source of well-being. The three terraces allow guests to make the most of this expectional view. The Estate is secured by a couple of guards, and cleaning is done every day to guarantee the comfort of our guests. We also offer a special food service prepared by our partner chefs - this can be arranged on site or delivered.
For lunch, I would recommend La Table de Marie for the friendliness of the owner, the freshness of her products and the generosity of her cuisine. For dinner, La Villa Madie (a restaurant with two Michellin stars) serves very refined cuisine just a five minute walk from the estate on a beautiful terrace by the water. Le Lou, the bar at the Roches Blanches hotel, is also a perfect place to enjoy an incredible view of the port of Cassis. If you find yourself on a boat trip, we have two insider tips for lunch: the l’Île Verte in La Ciotat or Chez le Belge in Marseilleveyre. Hiking in the Calanques National Park is a must and one spot in particular is not to be missed - the walk that goes from Port-Pin to the heights of the Calanque d'En-Vau. Finally why not let yourself be tempted by a brunch or an aperitif in an electric tuk-tuk with Patrick at the top of the Route des Crêtes with a panoramic view over the bay of La Ciotat and Cassis. Thrill seekers can also do it by electric mountain bike with Emilien!
The entire estate can be rented for seminars and companies benefit from a global service. Activities are also organized by us (boat rental, mountain bike rental, restaurant reservations, airport transfers). On the ground floor: a large bedroom (21m2) which can accommodate three people. On the first floor: seven bedrooms. On the second floor: the master suite (60 m2). The other three bedrooms are located in a house at the entrance to the estate, a few minutes' walk away. Two are on the ground floor, the third is on the first floor. The kitchen, living room and dining room are on the ground floor. There is also a cathedral lounge above the kitchen with a huge veranda. Finally, there is a projection room adjoining the dining room. If the number of beds is not sufficient we can arrange rentals of nearby houses.
