On the edge of the city of Quimper, this manor house, with shades of gray granite and slate, has a powerful architectural presence from the outside. The inside, however, is an entirely different story. The various accommodations boldly blend traces of the past, elements of modern comfort and touches of contemporary design. The arts receive a warm welcome here and are enthusiastically encouraged through the option of an "artists' stay". Much to the delight of holidaymakers, the property provides a warm stopover from which they can explore the "edge of the earth", France's first coastal department.
The unspoiled nature, the wild coasts and the mild climate (even in winter) attracted us to Brittany. The expressiveness and the special atmosphere of this estate did the rest. An enclosed park and an old building with several hundred years of history just a stone's throw from the city. Furthermore, the manor lent itself perfectly to a restoration which added modern comfort without altering its soul. Le Cleuyou gave us everything we had hoped for: heavenly tranquility on the outskirts of Quimper and only twenty minutes from the sea. A place that offers enough space for us, our friends, artists and guests. The ensemble is so carefully arranged that one would never get lost; but there are nonetheless five independent and unique apartments, an artist's studio, a concert hall, a seminar room and a vast park. It is the perfect place for those longing to distance themselves from the world and still be able to enjoy a community atmosphere. We call this “Privacy and Community”.
Giving a once feudal mansion a more contemporary and democratic purpose was an exciting challenge for us. We therefore dedicated one of the wings to culture, it features an open loft for concerts and other events. It was here that painter Silvia Willkens created the “Sainte du Cleuyou” fresco, a portrait of a woman larger than life. The other wing with five apartments is reserved for privacy and relaxation. Below the central tower, the Dôme des Étoiles apartment is an airy space which draws the gaze up to the stars. The Mansarde de l'Écrivain enjoys a view of the vast park with hundred-year-old trees. The walls in the Fort du Chevalier are reminiscent of a fortress and it has direct access to the park. A small congress hall, a medieval kitchen and fireplaces provide additional, communal areas for guests to come together in the mansion.
The Manoir de Cleuyou was once a fortress and was most likely of strategic importance from the Roman times. Its name refers to even older Celtic origins. The architecture as it stands today dates back to the Middle Ages. Formerly known as "the chateau", the Fort du Chevalier tower, its arrow slits and the bridle and pedestrian gate are the remaining traces of this past. The residential building consists of a 16th century wing to the west, and the east wing was extended by large French windows in the 19th century. The restored mill - testimony to feudal law - is one of the last functioning mills in the region. The park also has a long history and certainly adds to the charm of the estate: majestic blue cedars, a fountain, huge three-hundred-year-old sequoias and a stream winding through the estate.
Guests of the Manoir du Cleuyou will be immersed in a magical atmosphere. Le Cleuyou is a unique place, a green oasis, an atmospheric house with five spacious apartments far from the norms of hotels. One comes here to take a step back, find peace and communicate if they so choose. The house is characterised by brightness, spirituality and serenity. It is a refuge and a place dedicated to art. Among other notable works, the apartments feature originals by famous artist group HANGAR'T. For those looking to discover Brittany and follow in the footsteps of Commissioner Dupin, there is no place more ideally located. Fans of the famous commissioner, who was both down-to-earth, human and somewhat short tempered, will be able to try their hero's favourite cafes and restaurants for themselves. They will be able to visit the spots where his investigations took place. The author, Jean-Luc Bannalec, lives close to Cleuyou. He chose Finistère, the “edge of the world” in the far west of Brittany, to set up the crime scenes of his famous detective novels: Concarneau, Pont-Aven or the Glénan islands off the coast. In the large library in the living room, the nine volumes are of course available for an evening of reading in front of the fireplace.
In addition to the property's unique atmosphere, there are plenty of equally unique attractions hiding in the surroundings. The long sandy beaches of Bénodet or Concarneau are just twenty minutes away. The spirit of the Druids still roams this once Celtic land dotted with menhirs and dolmens which has long remained distant from foreign influences. It was not until the 19th century that artists such as Paul Gauguin discovered the magical landscapes. In the neighboring town of Pont-Aven, a colony of artists established themselves and made history under the name of “École de Pont-Aven”. Also of note are Locronan, a superb medieval village; the well-maintained golf courses, some of which overlook the sea; the long walks along the wild coast of Cap Sizun, a UNESCO world heritage site; and the venerable 15th century chapels of Finistère. We also recommend a boat cruise to the mouth of the Odet and the picturesque fishing village of Sainte-Marine.
The Salle de la Chouette Blanche lounge, with a beautiful oval table, can accommodate twelve people. The large adjoining living room can accommodate twelve more. The artist's room, which is somewhat bare but quite large, has three open floors and completes the ensemble for meetings in a neutral and inspiring atmosphere. In total, the property can accommodate thirty guests divided into several groups.

From mid-March to mid-April, they award a grant for a collaboration between two to three artists from various artistic or scientific fields. Collaboration groups can request a three-week stay at Cleuyou to work on their project. Le Cleuyou is the headquarters of IDfactory France, an Art Transfer Center in operation since 2007 with international connections formed during university activities in Germany. www.id-factory.de. The west wing offers space for the blues, photos and lectures. Mathematicians, art historians, filmmakers and everyday heroes met for the Journées de la Culture, while companies host innovation conferences in the small lounge.
In partnership with the Journées du Patrimoine de Pays et des Moulins, the Cleuyou participates in guided tours of Quimper and Ergué-Gabéric The owner offers a historic tour of the mansion on which he has also written a book.
