All that it once was can still be glimpsed in its outline and its walls. Its time of great power, intense agricultural activity and spiritual radiance is still perceptible, like a star that shines long after it has faded. La Corroirie château-monastery now offers visitors a moving testimony to a long history dating back to the Middle Ages. You just need to wander from building to building to feel it. Of course, the rooms have been adorned with pretty fabrics, bright, cheerful colours and welcome comforts, but the peace and quiet that ruled in Carthusian times still seem to still linger. In the heart of the Touraine region, adorned by so many châteaux, this particular one is unique, and has retained the sense of hospitality of its original vocation.
Touraine, the garden of France, the cradle of French history and culture, has enchanted me ever since I was a child. I grew up in this former Carthusian monastery, a place steeped in history and spirituality, where time feels like it has stood still. From an early age, I was involved in the restoration work that brought this unique place back to life, in collaboration with the Architectes des Bâtiments de France. We have made a point of preserving its soul while adapting it with modern comforts, to offer our guests an unforgettable stay. Being surrounded by the royal forest of Loches, cultivating the vegetable garden and picking roses to make elixirs are just some of the little joys I savour here.
La Corroirie château-monastery is an exceptional example of medieval architecture. The church, a jewel showcasing Plantagenet art, with its perfectly preserved vaults and soft light, was consecrated by the Archbishop of Paris in 1206, in the presence of John Lackland, King of England. La Corroirie is also a fortified monastery, with a moat, drawbridge and imposing walls. This architectural feature was necessary due to the region's turbulent history in the Middle Ages, when monasteries had to protect themselves from attacks. The architectural ensemble is remarkably harmonious, and the atmosphere is peaceful and steeped in history.
At the end of 1200, Carthusian monks came to settle in a feudal stronghold in the heart of Touraine and set up their "corroirie”, a place of work and prayer where they cultivated the land to provide for their community. In the 15th century, at the height of the Hundred Years' War, Charles VII, anxious to protect his lands and their inhabitants, authorised the fortification of the monastery and installed a garrison there. During the French Revolution, the monastery was sold and the monks dispersed to other places. In 1899, one of my grandfathers, who had a passion for history and heritage, bought the old monastery. Since then, each generation has been committed to restoring it, bringing it back to life and preserving this precious witness to the past.
