A central avant-corps topped with a rectangular pediment, two perfectly symmetrical wings pierced with countless windows, a large entrance hall, long enfilades of rooms: everything here inspires a somewhat intimidating solemnity. But this vast chateau with classic lines of great purity can also by moulded, by multiple details and a very neat layout, into a family home. Some guests will be here for professional reasons, others will be organising elegant parties or meeting with family and friends. Whatever the reason, everyone will find a subtle harmony between the architecture of a rare majesty and the perfectly preserved bucolic environment at Courtomer.
The chateau belonged to a powerful Norman family for several centuries. This family was closely linked to the Dukes of Alençon. One of the members of this family married the Earl of Tancarville's daughter, and one of us is a descendant of her's. When we were looking for a new family home in France in 2005, it seemed logical to turn to this connection and our personal history. Since then, we have been devoting all our energy to bringing it to life and sharing its splendour and elegance.
Inspired by the grandeur and beauty of the Palace of Versailles, Courtomer was built to reflect an ideal of nobility and elegance. It is located in the middle of three hundred hectares of parks, woods, fields and pastures with a farm still in operation. Its current structure is not that of the original chateau. The medieval chateau from the 11th century was demolished in the 18th century, then quickly rebuilt. Its vaulted cellars are all that remains of the medieval foundations. The "new" chateau is large, but simple in form, typical of the Enlightenment ideals. Its classic style and symmetry represent harmony and balance. It celebrates natural light, which pours in from all sides through the windows.
Courtomer is located in a gentle valley amid the green hills of the Orne. It was the seat of a powerful family of Norman gentlemen from the 11th century until the beginning of the 20th - almost a thousand years of stability despite the centuries of destructive wars and revolutions that shaped modern France, through all the social and economic upheavals. The last direct descendant of the Saint-Simon family died at the age of three and his heir married a member of the Aynac Turenne family. In 1905 the chateau was bought by a neighbour and a distant relative, the Count de Pelet. A hundred years later, in 2005, the Bonner family bought the chateau which is now dedicated to weddings, seminars and various events.
Courtomer Chateau is a grand and welcoming place. Each stay is a unique, welcoming and personalised experience designed to meet the needs of each client. To stay here is to live a childhood dream of being a fairy tale prince whilst also feeling at home. The chateau is located between Paris and the beaches of Normandy, two hours drive in both directions. The property has been completely refurbished to provide en suite bathrooms for each of the bedrooms and a fully equipped kitchen ideal for preparing family meals. Several open and inviting spaces are also perfect for organising events.
"Auberge des Peintres" in Saint-Céneri-le-Gerei offers traditional cuisine with a menu that changes according to seasonal products. "La Tête au Loup" in Pin-au-Haras specialises in chicken liver terrine and calvados crème brûlée. Among the sites to visit, we recommend: the Notre-Dame de Sées cathedral near Alençon (Gothic style and classified as a Historic Monument) and Bellême, a medieval city. North of the city, the forest of Bellême is one of the most beautiful in France, it is known for its century-old oaks. In autumn, there are over 1100 species of mushroom! La Perrière is a charming millennial village, with picturesque streets and colourful houses. Finally, the Haras de la Chéchinière offers a wide range of activities for horse riding enthusiasts, and the Companions of the Wind offer hot air balloon flights.
The chateau and its park can accommodate weddings of up to fifty people. It is also perfect for any other type of reception such as a birthday party or a family celebration. Fifteen rooms are available in the chateau and the farmhouse located in the park to accommodate guests after the reception.
