A renovated 18th-century house, set back in calm with a walled garden,
nestled in the historical heart of Senlis, in northern France’s Oise department
Senlis, OISE picardy 60300 FR

Location

The property lies around 40 kilometres north of Paris, in Senlis, a town of paved, narrow streets and old edifices. Indeed, Senlis is one of the major historical towns of France’s Oise department in the Hauts-de-France region. In fact, this town was a place of royal residence in the Middle Ages and it has kept remarkable built heritage, including Gallo-Roman ramparts, a Gothic cathedral and townhouses from the 17th and 18th centuries. Local life is especially vibrant, with shops, markets, schools and a wide range of amenities. Senlis is also nestled in the heart of the beautiful Oise Pays de France regional nature park and it is very close to Halatte, Ermenonville and Chantilly forests. You can reach Paris in around 45 minutes via the A1 motorway. And Paris Charles de Gaulle airport is only around 20 minutes away. From several train stations nearby, you can easily get into the French capital by rail too.

Description

From the town’s historical centre, a covered carriage entrance leads to the house and garden, which is set back from the street and enjoys privacy. The stone facade is plain and even, punctuated with windows aligned with each other and fitted with swing shutters. The house was built in the 18th century and then redesigned in the 19th century. It offers a 285m² floor area, spread over three levels. The garden-facing elevation combines dressed stone with pale rendering. Its windows and glazed doors are broader and contemporary, bringing an abundance of natural light inside and opening the rooms up to the beautiful exterior. The house has been renovated masterfully and with respect for its built heritage. Indeed, the renovation project has integrated high-quality materials. The dwelling offers nine rooms, including five bedrooms. A two-level vaulted cellar lies beneath the edifice. A closed garage can house two vehicles. You can reach it from the street via the covered carriage entrance. This garage also leads to the back of the plot. The walled garden is completely enclosed and covers 475m². It offers a lawn dotted with a range of shrubs, extended with a paved terrace that forms a transitional space leading from the reception rooms out to the lush exterior. At the back of the plot, you can still see the remains of third-century Gallo-Roman ramparts.

The house

The ground floor
The entrance hall connects to the main rooms and a wooden spiral staircase leads upstairs. On one side, there is a vast room with wood strip flooring. It is a dual-aspect space with several windows on both sides. This room brings together a lounge and a dining area. A fireplace stands against one of the walls. On the other side, there is a fully fitted kitchen. It looks out at the garden through large panes. A contemporary glazed partition creates a visual link with the entrance hall and spreads natural light further in the interior. An extra room, which could be used as an office, lies next to a lavatory.

The first floor
A central landing connects to three large bedrooms, all of which have wood strip flooring. The first one has an en-suite bathroom. The two other ones share a shower room, which you can reach from the corridor.

The second floor
The stairs lead up to a vast 40m² lounge beneath a cathedral ceiling. The exposed beams of the roof frame underline the impressive ceiling height. This central space connects to a bathroom and to two bedrooms, also in the roof space. Wood strip flooring extends across the rooms here in continuity with the lower levels. The windows offer views of the walled garden and, beyond, the rooftops of Senlis and the silhouette of its cathedral bell tower.

The garden

The garden is enclosed with tall stone walls, so it enjoys privacy. From the house, several garden-level doors lead straight out into this secret outdoor haven, naturally extending the reception rooms. A brick terrace edges the garden-facing elevation too. Old ramparts enclose the plot, protecting the private space from gazes and noise. Indeed, this stone enclosure creates a garden that is truly cosy and pleasant in your daily life here.

Our opinion

This charming, characterful home with a secret garden and garage is a gem of built heritage, nestled in the historical heart of a vibrant old town. The property offers many highly sought-after characteristics, including a walled garden, a covered parking space and convenient closeness to shops, schools and amenities. Indeed, this delightful property is the promise of a lifestyle in which you can spend much time getting around simply on foot, in the middle of a pleasant town. A masterful renovation project on the house has integrated contemporary features alongside the old decor in line with the original architecture. It has created a haven of fine balance that would suit the needs of a family looking for space and calm.
