Description
The villa
The ground floor
From the veranda, a glazed double door leads into the reception rooms. There is a double-size lounge with a fireplace and archway. Beyond it there is a dining room. Many tall small-paned windows bring an abundance of natural light into the rooms. The floor is covered with salmon-pink sandstone tiles laid in staggered rows. These tiles help keep the interior cool throughout the summer. A corridor leads to the kitchen, which takes you outside via French windows. The corridor also leads to an adjoining utility room. At the other end, a door in the lounge leads to a protruding section that has been turned into an office.
The first floor
A staircase with a wrought-iron balustrade and red terracotta-tiled steps with blue-and-white ceramic risers leads up to the first floor. Up here, there are four bedrooms, including a dual-aspect room. They look out through the west, south and east elevations. There is also a bathroom and a shower room with a lavatory. The high-ceilinged bedrooms are filled with natural light. Their floors are covered with hexagonal terracotta tiles. The light floods inside through French windows with catches. Outside, these windows have finely crafted white wrought-iron guardrails around mini balconies.
The second floor
The second floor lies only in the villa’s old, central section. It offers a 33m² room in the roof space, which has been turned into a bedroom, as well as a bathroom and a lavatory. The space up here makes it possible for an extra bedroom to be created on this second floor.
The garden
The rectangular garden covers 500m² and extends in front of the house’s south-facing elevation. It is organised into three spaces. Protruding from the facade, the veranda, surrounded by an ochre balustrade and crowned with a transparent roof, forms a space protected from both the sun and rain and where you can enjoy open-air meals or simply unwind. An 80m² stone-paved terrace lies just beyond it and leads to the space beside the swimming pool and to the garage. A maritime pine tree with many branches provides welcome shade in summer. At the bottom of the garden, there is a 20m² shed that has been turned into a studio apartment with two separate rooms. Lastly, a half-underground cellar offers useful storage space.
Our opinion
This upper-middle-class villa from France’s belle époque period has been extended over time to form a delightful dwelling today. Indeed, the property is a harmonious whole, nestled in the heart of the highly sought-after Le Mourillon district in the vibrant city of Toulon on the Mediterranean coast. With its five bedrooms and self-contained studio apartment, this family home could easily host guests. The villa’s ideal location, its shady garden and its refreshing swimming pool make the place both suitable as a main home, near the shopping street Rue Lamalgue, and as a holiday home, just a five-minute walk from beaches and Saint-Louis fortress.
