Far from the hustle and bustle of Paris that we left two years ago, we have just opened our guest house in the heart of Périgord. The region enchanted with us the richness of its heritage, the beauty of its landscapes and a mild, sunny climate. We have created a property that represents us in a place where calm, space and well-being reign in a "family home" spirit that is both chic and bucolic.
It is a 16th century mansion that we have renovated by restoring its original volumes and cachet while providing some necessary modernity for excellent comfort. To achieve this we recruited the help of the best local craftsmen including stone workers, metalworkers and carpenters. The adobe floors and the monumental wooden staircase are original. The large reception rooms each have a fireplace to make beautiful log fires when winter sets in. The furniture was found in nearby flea markets and antique shops. The tobacco drying shed, traditionally a feature on all Perigord farms in the 19th century, has been transformed into a summer lounge near the swimming pool. It provides shade and is a lovely spot for reading or sharing a meal.
This noble residence served as a farm from the 19th century until the very end of the 20th century. The last owners worked here as carpenters.
Our guest house is ideally located on the borders of the white, purple and black Périgord in the famous Périgordin "golden triangle" located between Périgueux, Bergerac and Sarlat. Surrounded by seven hectares of nature with multicoloured trees, Les Cieux invites you to relax and laze around the swimming pool filled with crystal-clear water. Our breakfasts consist exclusively of local and organic products as well as homemade cakes and jams. At lunchtime, refreshing snacks and homemade ice cream can be served on the terrace or around the pool. Our wellness area with hammam and sauna, which can be privatized for two hours of use, is an invitation to rest and relaxation. Professional massages can be reserved and take place in the park or in the suites. Bikes are available for hire. In December and January we offer truffle-based stays, a product that we treasure in our two truffle houses. Guests will also be offered our homemade foie gras with Monbazillac which is a real treat. We are also fans of classical music (and music in general) any musicians staying with us will have the chance to play our 1929 Pleyel baby grand piano which is perfectly tuned.
A Gallic village dating back to 3rd century BC was discovered near our home in La Peyrouse. It is one of the oldest villages discovered in France to date. The charming little village of Sainte-Alvère was the first truffle market in Périgord, long before Sarlat and Périgueux. I sell my truffles there every Monday morning in winter. Eve and Christian run La Petite Factory which is a lovely little restaurant on the village square, shaded in summer by a hundred-year-old plane tree. Their cuisine is made exclusively with local products and is beautifully prepared. A little further, in Bergerac, the Galerie Bénédicte Giniaux is worth a visit. They specialise in personalised and stylised figurative art following different themes: the world of humans and animals, travel, nudes, scenes of life and still life. The programming of the Saint-Amand-de-Vergt and Paunat classical music festivals are of a very high quality and the churches that host them participate with the exception of these evenings.
Each suite has air conditioning, a king size bed, a reading area, a writing desk, a wardrobe and a spacious bathroom with a walk-in shower, sink, and toilet. Some suites have direct access to the courtyard or the park; one of them adjoins the living room. Breakfast is served around a large table in the dining room. Depending on the weather, it can also be served on the terrace or in the summer lounge. The place is not suitable for children under 14 years old. Pets are not allowed. Smoking is not permitted in the guest rooms or communal areas of the property.
