Les Mussets has been restored to its former glory with a renovation that has been carried out down to the very last detail. Bright colours alternate with softer tones to create a warm ambience, enhanced by the many chandeliers that adorn the rooms. The gardens and parkland where a few fallow deer peacefully graze, and the lake where silhouettes of the trees are reflected against the blue sky, make this an eminently poetic place. Guests will enjoy discovering the ancient Bourbonnais province from this Belle Époque retreat.
We fell in love with France, its people, its culture, its food and above all its architecture nearly 30 years ago. Shortly after our first visit, we considered buying a property. After several trips and searches, we found the château of our dreams in the Auvergne. As soon as we visited this property, we knew our search was over. We were home at last!
Set in eight hectares of parkland, the Belle Époque château has an elegant U-shaped layout. The facade is straight and symmetrical, with two storeys and an attic. It is framed by two slightly projecting wings linked by a stone terrace. The entire roof is covered in glazed tiles and topped with numerous finials. The grounds, which offer tranquillity and wonderfully varied views, include an outbuilding, a moat and a pond with a small island. Eight fallow deer live and thrive naturally on part of the property.
The château was built in 1889 by the Renaud family, whose "R" adorns the top of the château's two chimneys. It was designed by the architect Antoine Percilly, who built many houses and buildings in the town and the region, including the Hospices de Vichy in 1890. Taking advantage of the arrival of the railways and the new station nearby, the Renauds, who were wealthy Parisian landowners, had this second home built near Vichy so that they could come here for their holidays and enjoy the bustle of the famous spa town.
This château offers a retreat for those searching for serenity and privacy. Here, time slows down and the natural beauty of the surroundings takes centre stage. Far from the hustle and bustle of the outside world, it is a place to recharge your batteries and open the door to countless relaxation and adventure opportunities. Situated close to Vichy, it benefits from a location that is both intimate and close to all amenities. The estate manager is on hand to organise tailor-made activities to suit guests' interests: yoga classes, painting workshops with a local artist or a private meal prepared by a local chef and served on site.
Take a discovery flight from the Vichy flying club to enjoy the scenery from the air and discover the thrill of flying. Hire a small boat or a stand-up paddleboard for a trip down the Allier. Book a table at Troisgros, a 3-star Michelin restaurant just outside Roanne, at Maison Decoret, a 1-star Michelin restaurant, or at L'Auberge des Tureaux in Montaigu-le-Blein, a bistro and gourmet restaurant. Fall into the relaxing embrace of Vichy's famous spas and thermal baths. Paolo's Italian restaurant, P'tit Montmartre, and the Brasserie de l'Opéra are other great spots in Vichy.
The château and its eight-hectare parkland can be rented out for filming and photo shoots. There is accommodation for 17 people available on site.
