Between the Andalusian hills and the Moroccan Rif, on the other side of the Strait, this old cortijo is a perfect illustration of southern Spain's great agricultural estates. The heat can be intense here, but the houses are well-protected under the shade of luxuriant vegetation and vast covered terraces. In the interweaving of refined, welcoming rooms which open out onto courtyards, gardens and patios, where the air freely circulates between flowers and fruit, life happens both inside and outside. The day follows the temperature changes. In the hottest hours, you can relax in the soft darkness of your room or on a deckchair under the shade of a palm tree, before heading off to the swimming pool or nearby beaches, strolling through the fishing villages or hiking in the Los Alcornocale natural park and feeling the Andalusian spirit
In 1985, when I was 21, I rode 2,700 miles on my own from Aguilon, in the Zaragoza region, to Paris. When I got back in Spain, I wrote a book about this adventure. Then, in 1989, my husband and I decided to move to this region and the project of a lifetime began.
El Aguilon is built in the style of a traditional Andalusian cortijo, with a beautiful courtyard surrounded by stables and decorated with many palm trees. A cortijo is a traditional rural dwelling found in Andalusia and parts of Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha in southern Spain. They are often isolated structures on large family farms or next to their extensive adjoining land. A cortijo generally comprised of a large house, as well as ancillary buildings such as workers' quarters, livestock sheds, granaries, oil mills, barns and often a wall enclosing the land where there were no buildings.
The natural grounds, with their backdrop of mountains and distant views across the Strait of Gibraltar to Morocco's Rif mountains beyond won us over! We brought this place to life 35 years ago!
El Aguilon is the epitome of casual chic. It’s the perfect place to relax and spend time with family and friends. The cortijo can accommodate up to 17 people. The four gîtes make it possible to enjoy holidays as a group while still having private areas. The property has a swimming pool, a tennis court, an orange grove and beautiful tropical gardens. In the winter months, the weather is wonderfully mild with warm sunshine, but not too hot. On cold winter nights, a log fire will warm up even the coldest of hearts.
The El Aguilon promenades are spectacular. From the surrounding hills there are breathtaking views of Africa across the Strait. The property is located in the Los Alcornocales Natural Park, a group of mountain ranges whose highest peak, Pico del Aljibe, is 1092 metres high. This protected natural area covers 167,767 hectares. Hiking and nature lovers will be over the moon here! Close to the house there is a fantastic little road/cycle path, which passes behind Facinas along the secondary road to the Santuario de la Luz. El Aguilon is ideally located between Tarifa's most beautiful beaches; Bolonia and Valdevaqueros. The Tarifa headland is the dividing line between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, which meet just in front of Zahara de los Atunes, a typical, picturesque fishing village.
El Aguilon, a traditional Andalusian cortijo set in lush gardens and surrounded by the Los Alcornocales nature park, can accommodate any filming or photo shoot requirements. There are seven bedrooms available on site.
