Cadaques is a small Catalan port that preserves traces of a bustling era in which architects, attracted by Salvador Dali's "transcendental" aura and the great artists who surrounded him, led hedonistic yet impoverished lives. A little way away stands the Casa del Capitan. Discreetly mirroring the outlines of its promontory, it is a masterful work of art. Half a century later, everything is still intact: the tricks of the light and shadows, the fluidity of space, the extreme simplicity of forms and materials, and the immensity of the blue. There is so much beauty to contemplate here that it could take up your entire day.
This place combines everything we were looking for: a well preserved natural environment with the sea nearby, a house with remarkable architecture, a rich history, plenty of sunshine, proximity to a charming village and easy access. After much research, we bought and renovated the house in 2017.
Designed in 1962, the Casa del Capitan has been completely renovated in keeping with its original architecture and the incredible history of the place. It combines modernity, simplicity and comfort with Mediterranean and Californian influences from the 1950s. The house is built on a north-west and south-east axis, parallel to the sea and adapts to the irregular topography at the edge of a cliff. It is a single-storey house that mirrors the 7.5 meters of uneven ground. It is thus composed of seven small buildings (Casitas) that are connected to one another. The house is visible only from the sea and fits perfectly with the landscape of the Cap de Creus Natural Park.
The house, built in 1962, is the work of famous American architect Peter Harnden. The property was well ahead of its time at the beginning of the sixties in Cadaques, and was a source of inspiration and reference for other architects. Captain Moore, the former occupant and Dali's personal secretary, used to welcome a variety of international artists, intellectuals and free spirits here. The vast park is full of statues and objects inherited from the Dalinian period, as well as an beautiful, little chapel.
Located on the edge of the charming village of Cadaques in northern Barcelona, the Casa del Capitan is a five-minute walk from Dali's house. Perched on a hill facing the sea with a three-hectare park, the villa is an exceptional ensemble. The setting is enchanting and the surrounding nature is particularly well preserved thanks to its proximity to the Cap de Creus natural park. A few steps carved into the rock provide direct access to the sea and there is a stunning infinity pool.
Discover the Cap de Creus national park and its unique geological and botanical surprises during hikes or bike rides. The 16th century Santa Maria church, located in the historic centre of Cadaques, offers a magnificent view of the bay and is home to one of the most important Baroque altarpieces in Catalonia by sculptor Pau Costa - it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Located on the Verdera mountain, the 14th century Benedictine monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes is a treasure of Catalan Romanesque art. Last but not least, Compartir - which means "to share" - is our favourite restaurant - they serve local food in dishes that are placed at the centre of the table in an informal and relaxed atmosphere.
