A tangle of winding lanes, arches and vaults, interlocking houses, surrounded by fields of vines and olive trees. You just need to come to this village to experience all of the Drôme provençale. And the Clos de la Croix du Serre has a special place in its history. Over the last 200 years, the house has undergone many changes, before being restored to its former glory thanks to the hard work of a passionate old building lover. The house now shines with its large, carefully designed rooms, its showcased ornaments and its delightfully shady garden. Stroll, dream, play, cool off in the pool or venture up Mont Ventoux. Your stay here will be like no other.
Ever since I was a child, I've been to the Baronnies provençales and the Bas-Dauphiné. This region and the village of Mirabel-aux-Baronnies, where the family home is located, were an obvious choice when I moved here, wanting a quieter life close to nature. The village, perched on a mound of “safres”, takes its name from its panoramic view of the Baronnies mountain range. Residents enjoy its microclimate and the many shops within walking distance. Set back from the main road, the peaceful setting, the view of the Baronnies, Mont Ventoux and the old village all appealed to me. This vast, charming manor house was just waiting to be brought back to life, and it was this challenge that prompted me to buy it in 2019.Ever since I was a child, I've been to the Baronnies provençales and the Bas-Dauphiné. It is a 350 m2 town house with a 150 m2 garden. In the entrance hall, which is paved with cement tiles, the remains of a medieval gallery can be seen on the right, carved out of the rock. The first floor is accessed via a stone staircase worn in places by 200 years of use. This leads to a landing decorated with a stucco atlas and a superb overmantel between the windows. This space opens onto another room featuring a line of wood panelling, a beautiful stained glass window and a stone arch with elaborate lighting. Outside, to the south, a double garden includes a shaded area with a summer kitchen and a dining area. The second part includes a boules court and a Moroccan-style lounge. The two areas are separated by a large stone pool. Four years of meticulous renovation work preserved the old floors, terracotta tiles, cement tiles and parquet, the beams, wrought iron and mouldings. The house has finally been restored to its former splendour.
The main body of the house was built around 1822 in a simple layout: two rooms on each floor, reached via a wide staircase. The main façade is in First Empire style. Divided up in the 1920s, the house on the square was bought and extended by a family of winegrowers, whose owner, a cinema enthusiast, opened the village's first cinema in the garage. In 1955, the house became the property of the local council and was occupied by the village doctor, the medical practice and staff accommodation until 2004, when it was used as a training centre for the fire brigade and afterwards fell into serious disrepair. After I had made several purchase requests over five years, I became the owner of the building in 2019, which I named "Clos de la Croix du Serre" in tribute to its intimate garden and the small square with the same name at the back.
Le Clos de la Croix du Serre offers you an original experience, an immersion in a Provençal bourgeois house. Its regional location is a major asset. Here, you can walk to all of the shops. The house is welcoming and has been designed as a family home. The decor is tasteful, with 18th and 19th century bourgeois furnishings. It is a great place to stay, both indoors and out. Close to everything but providing absolute peace and quiet, our guests will appreciate the commanding views over the countryside and the activities on offer: billiards, boules, table football, the swimming pool, a roof-top bath, a home cinema, library. Everyone will find a quiet, calm space for themselves here.
